Do you feel that being an in house attorney is often a thankless position?

Not particularly. Are you at a large company?

In that case, I would try to stick it out a year and see if things get better over time as you develop deeper relationships with your internal business clients.

It depends and some of that comes from the executives down. Our executive team really wants legal involved and sets the example that we’re all a team working toward a common goal. They don’t pit the business against legal. I have friends where that isn’t the culture and legal is seen as a “problem.”

like

I’ve got limited experience - two and a half years after twenty in private practice - but that’s not been my experience.

It certainly feels 1000% less thankless than when I was in private practice.

like

Yes it can be, because unlike when you are at a law firm, you’re no longer revenue generating and part of the “front office”. But I didn’t go in house to be a star of the show. I went in house to have a life.

like

It depends A LOT on the company culture. I’ve been treated well and I’ve been treated like trash.

like

Also depends a lot on how you view your role at the company.

like

Agree with A1 depends on culture

Mostly people are professional/respectful. I’m a litigator so I understand why the business folks aren’t thrilled to be talking to me. But overall it’s been fine.

like

I think it depends on what you are practicing in house. Im labor/employment, EEO and HR and the HR/personnel colleagues of mine seem really appreciative of my advice… But I am in a silo with them and don’t do much with the other in house legal people… who I know feel burnt out and unappreciated from time to time.

I’ve been in-house at a medium-size bank’s trust department for about a year now. I get much more praise from outside counsel than I do from the executive team. Though, I mostly work with the executive team during messy situations, so it’s probably a “no news is good news” type of mentality/culture at the executive level.

I think it depends on the department you ask. HR, Accounting, Security all love legal. Sales… not so much…

I’m back in my apartment, just trying to take it one day at a time, and not re read his texts too much. My birthday is Thursday 🙄

If you practice collections in-house, what do you earn and do you receive a bonus?

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. As the only attorney, I oversee all statewide collections efforts, from demand letter to garnishment, with a case volume of nearly 7k new cases per year, of which the majority I end up litigating. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there.
