We usually have a holiday lunch for our department, and it's generally pretty pleasant. It can be fun to talk to people outside the usual workplace routine. I guess there are people who don't get along or whatever, but it has never struck me as being tense.
Eh I don’t let others awkward tension ruin the mood, we have to find the bright side and little things to celebrate! It’s the little things in life!
Pro
I'm retired now but used to find those things awkward. Half the people wanted to be there, but the other half managed to just tolerate the event. Things always felt like some unseen hand was trying to clear off the table before most people were ready to leave. The ones wielding the "unseen hand" were the party-haters and socially awkward people who were not great conversationalists and just wanted to get back to the paperwork on their desks.
Rising Star
Our company has a luncheon and we throw a little dinner for my team.
I think all the "Rah Rah" let's be a team stuff is just nonsense. We get along fine, we get our work done - but I don't have a desire to be besties with my coworkers. It's often just extra money to spend as we have to bring in food, get into a gift exchange for more money spent for gifts we'll just donate to the goodwill in 2 weeks.
Honestly it depends on the holiday. We don't do much for the holidays outside of Christmas and Thanksgiving but we do usually have some sort of potluck for those two and then for Christmas we also do a gift exchange. I actually really like both celebrations.
