Do you need a technical degree to be a data analytical consultant? Or a data analyst in general? Or will you be hopelessly behind compared to peers who majored in data science?

You need to understand
1. where the data is coming from,
2. how it’s being integrated, stored and used,
3. and what problem the analysis is solving.
Depending on the role a analytics consultant will lean towards 1/2/3 of the above IMO.

Data analytics is quite easy honestly. Some really basic regression coding or even excel regressions, visualizations, and maybe some basic ETL code.

No one with a data science degree will go for a data analyst role generally, so you won’t be outperformed in that sense.

Not at all, in fact I’ve found a ton of folks with liberal arts degrees find jobs as analyst (purely anecdotal from my own experience). I don’t even have a technical degree and I’ve been in analytics for 8 years.
Skills are what matter the most, helps to have taken some on-demand courses if you don’t have anything else. Without any experience yet, you’ll start out as a junior analyst somewhere and then work your way up.
Learn SQL, excel (formulas, pivot tables, charting), data viz, data storytelling, basics of stats, Python if you can, and you’ll be fine.

like

You don’t need it but you’re gonna have a hard time competing against people with the degrees and years of experience in the field. The days of breaking into the field with zero exp are long gone

Nope, I did a non-stem major, worked a year in market research whilst learning SQL on the side, then moved to consulting (and crushing it now compared to my STEM peers)

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more. If the end goal would be that the friend might one day be a product manager and me an engineering manager taking instructions from the same friend, isn't consultant profile an easier path to growth. I had been practising DSA for years and the competition is only ever growing.
