You don’t absolutely need to buy one, but it definitely gives you a lot more options for recreation and so makes living here more fun. A smaller car makes it much easier to park in the city. Regarding costs, we have a VW eGolf. Charge at work mainly, so really minimal running expenses. Home charging mainly just to top it up. Minimal maintenance, too!

like

No car for me and my spouse. We thought about it and rented a place with a parking space, but we couldn't justify the price tag, specifically the cost per ride.

M-F we only go to work or maybe someplace in town for dinner/drinks, and transit and wfh are too hard to beat. One weekend day is usually spent at home or in town, which again transit is fine for. For 1/7 days we *might* go somewhere that we would need uber for. Once in a while, going deep into the east or south bay comes up, or driving to a hike or something where a car would be ideal, but let's call that once a month.

Buying a car to meaningfully use it once a month wasn't worth it for my spouse and I. But maybe your usage would be much higher.

like

Additional context to describe my needs: spouse and I live and work in SF with convenient access to muni/bart, and we wfh or in downtown SF. If you or your spouse need to commute from outer Richmond to Sunnyvale, your car needs will be very different.

Didn't want to spend that much on a car so I got a motorcycle for that exact reason. It's been fantastic and has made my daily commute (staying in the city) something I actively look forward to. (Increased relative risk factor vs cars is very much real, but also exaggerated when you control for responsible behaviour)

Another option if you just want the car for weekend fun trips is Zipcar. It's like $100 for a full day and quite convenient, so may be cheaper vs buying a car if you don't plan to use it super often

like

I love my Corolla and am not a car guy. It allows for so much spontaneity. I do not consider myself an outdoorsy guy and do not use my car for tahoe trips. For me, having a car removes the mental calculation every time of “is this trip worth it?” For example, if transportation is a variable cost, running to Nordstrom Rack to find a bargain shirt for $40 becomes economically inefficient because that shirt becomes $70 with Ubers there and back.

I don’t have kids yet but I feel like if and when I do, then it’s even more of a no brainer

like

I am a car guy! And even I don’t move my car unless I’m leaving the city limits. The bike is simply superior

That said, I am also a big outdoor boy, so those feelings of road-tripping and exploring California are essential to my happiness

like

I own a car but honestly that is just because the thought of not having one gives me anxiety. I just want to be able to get in it and go when I need to. But I know plenty of people who don't have one.

I have never owned a vehicle, been in the city since 2008. I did zipcar for a short period; there are other options. I’ve rented one a few times, but weekend drop-off can be a challenge depending on the company. I ride a bike or take MUNI. 🤷‍♂️

Definitely want one to explore the outdoors over a weekend but can’t justify it financially.

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.

I have joined hcl on 24 th sep 2021 and my last working day here is 18th May 2022.
Today I received my provisional full and final settlement and the payable amount is negative -11454. They are recovering the full AMPB amount which I got from September months.
I have heard from this platform only that hcl stopped the recovery police but still I got the negative fnf.

I’m currently an LLC and looking to assemble an equity deal with an advisor. I don’t know how to set it up with him where he gets his equity in the future when we restructure the entity to a c/s Corp and give out his shares. It doesn’t make sense for us to switch now and get double taxed when we haven’t lifted off the ground. This is pre launch. Any advice?

Going through a closeout. 50-50 profit share allocation, but my business partner has been using the venture money at their personal piggy bank (hence the breakup). My accountants say because we agreed to 50-50 shares, the leftover money has to be divided equally.

They spent $100k in the last month on random "work stuff" but bought a new car, etc. Now I have to pay for it with less equity return!

Just wanted to rant, I'll probably never go into a partnership again.
