No, I don't think so. I have some colleagues with an MBA and they never use any of the skills they learned. In fact, I've had one friend say they learned more from books from their degree. I'm glad I didn't go that route.
You don’t really. It’s a 2-3 year investment in yourself.
I have a buddy doing that right now. I haven’t seen them in a year
Depending on where you are in your career, an MBA won’t help much. I know someone that’s been a Product Manager for 15+ years. He didn’t complete his MBA. At this point he’s only 3-4 classes before earning it. For him, it’s not worth the investment. He’s past the usefulness of the degree.
Never even considered "needing" one.
An MBA is a nice to have. Especially as a differentiator for job hiring.
I often see “5+ years of experience, MBA nice to have” for PMM job reqs
I think an MBA is helpful for PMM because it develops some cross-functional understanding of business. And it built my confidence.
As an early career MBA, the degree helped me break into PMM and tech marketing as a whole.
I’m not sure where I would be today without it. Though I did identify half way through my MBA I probably would have been fine in marketing without the degree (coming from a BA in music).
Is an MBA required as a PMM? Absolutely not.
Nope. I didn’t even know about PMM as a role until my MBA internship. My MBA emphasis was in entrepreneurship.
Many of the skills taught in my MBA emphasis were PMM adjacent.
I knew I wanted to be a PMM after working with multiple startups at my school’s accelerator and doing product market fit research, taking ideas to become products, and thinking about an organizations future.
I saw how strategic marketing can be. So, that led me to seek PMM roles out of business school.
Business school teaches valuable concepts but it doesn't always translate perfectly to the real world of product marketing. You'll still need to learn the ropes and gain practical experience. People I know who went that route most often than not regret it.
Wise words. Did you get your MBA?

This is spammy, but if you’re going to do it, should probably mention what city
In general an MBA isn’t necessary but big businesses/corporations might consider those who do have one over those without one. If there’s a specific company/companies you want to work for, try to have an informational interview with employees in your dream position to know whether it’s preferred or not.
