I run before work, it helps keep my mindset right. Then log off by 5:30 (some days aren’t possible but if you really prioritize I find most days it’s achievable), and cook dinner, go for a walk, do a dance class, see friends.
The trick is not letting work take over your Monday-Friday entirely. Find other things and make time for them. If work doesn’t allow you to do that then honestly you should find another job, because you won’t regret finding balance and happiness, but you will regret working instead.
I’m not saying it will be easy, but if you persist you will feel a mindset change, it takes some time though.
I think part of it is being constantly connected. It’s even harder with kids.
Perception is everything man. You should be feeling like the man. You have a job, you got great money coming in, options down the line to make even more and working for a great company. if you’re young and single you have the world by the balls, if you’re older and have a family you are the breadwinner and providing for your family.
I understand how you’re feeling and most likely you are a bit burned out. I’ve been there but not making good money at a good company like JPM, Long hours, tough work and office politics is what we signed up for man, that’s why we get paid the big bucks.
I’d say, try to take a little bit of PTO or making a little more time to get your mind right. Practice looking at all the positives and being grateful for everything that you have, as gratitude is a strong feeling and very overpowering and will help get your mind right. Hope you succeed.
Great way to put it into perspective!
i’m not sure it’s great anywhere.
Every single day
May be it's time for a break. If you have vacation time or personal time. Even if it is a long weekend. Schedule time away, away from everything. Turn off all electronics. Just renew yourself, self care is the best thing to reset yourself. If not it will take a toll on your health.
yes you should still feel blessed. i came to wall street 26 from wharton mba and im turning 65 so in this environment you are fortunate. yes sorry it’s challenging and taxing but you if you don’t want your spot there’s 1000 others that would take it. it’s very hard in corporate world but cash flow is king. sorry.
Grateful for sure! But ready to create my own balance too. It’s self discovery, honesty with oneself and brute determination to break through our own self imposed barriers.
I understand this sentiment. It really crept up on me in just last few months finally. I've been at my company for 2.5 years now and only recently has it hit me where I just can't stomach it anymore. I'm considering changes going forward, maybe a recruiter.
What are your passions? What do you care about? What do you want your life to look like right now if you could choose?
I ask because perhaps answering these will help you realize if you just need a change in mindset or perhaps a change in job. Maybe both. Reprioritizing your health and wellness/happiness will always lead you to where you're happiest. Don't suffer at your current job for the wrong reasons
Try to focus on something that makes you excited. Friendships, dating/marriage, plan a vacation, start a new hobby. You have to give yourself something to look forward to. Otherwise it will be hard to break this pattern your not alone.
When I was at JPM, I felt that way. I felt like I would catch up on the things they wanted and then they wanted something else. It was unsatisfying because I felt like no matter what I did I could never satisfy the team and they kept moving the finish line. In hindsight, I think they do that to keep you challenged and driven and learning. Since I left, i really miss that environment of constant challenges. I would go back in a heartbeat.
This. I agree.
I took a break from jpm but I may be ready to go back soon…
I'm waiting to be laid off
IThat was my 2023, trying to put more positive, God and a little EAP, has helped me. Its tough more work less workers.
I have been examining and really thinking in my own life as I am feeling tired after decades in the industry. A couple of things that I have been considering in my own life and maybe helpful for you are:
1) Burnout normally does not occur if you derive pleasure and energy from what you are doing day to day. But keep in mind that there are seasons and even when you love your job there are good and bad days. Examine your day to day. Where do you derive satisfaction with your job and where you do not? Do you derive satisfaction from more than 50% of your day or less?
2) What is your passion? Did you pursue finding your passion in life? But don’t feel guilty if you feel you have not. If all was perfect in your life, would you?
-What are you really good at and honestly what are still developing skills on and has you maybe feeling very insecure hence forth feeling inadequate. Henceforth adding stress. Unlike media portrayals of becoming good at something takes constant effort, failure and dedication to the habits to perfect our craft.
3) Why are you working? What had you excited about working there when you started?
- are you burnt out or are you unhappy and wrestles @ work or home? and if so why?
4) Are you brave enough to do what it takes to reach out for the next level or the next thing that you believe in?What are your options? Who are the stakeholders?
5)Imagine that you are at the end of life. Write your eulogy. What would you say about you.
6)do you still like working at the company? Why yes and why not?
7 - when we work, we exchange our life for money. What are you being compensated for? Become really good what what you are and become super disciplined about making the time for the things that will make you grow in life and career.
Everyone’s circumstances are different.
I am firm believer that we hold the answers consciously or subconsciously. I also know that we have the power of changing direction or course correcting as needed. But we have to have the courage to face the good, the bad and the ugly of ourselves in order to turn the manure into a garden, the garden that will bring peace and a fulfilling meaning to life.
Take some time off to recharge in a positive way. Healthy eating (but don’t eat like a rabbit) no junk or alcohol if you drink on vacation and reduce or eliminate sugar. Start a 30 min exercise routine at home or at a gym. It’s not about fitness entirely… there are positive benefits to exercise in our mood and brain but it’s about discipline and creating wins to empower your state of being. Aim for something like a 5k or a mini fitness challenge. Make it fun. Start writing the answers to these questions mentioned above and or create your ow. See if you can work with a mental health coach and maybe eventually a career coach. Start reading more if you do not and maybe take up a fun class (udemy or edEx) to help you explore something fun and that you are interested in that lasts only the week. Engage your family when you feel ready and let them know how you feel. When you get back to work you will need a support network and go find people that think differently than you to exchange ideas and professionals to be in your support tribe. It’s all about the vibe of the tribe.
The truth is that life is not fair… ever and it stinks. Makes us mad…but being mad and feeling sorry solves nothing. it’s all on how we look at our circumstances and what you do in positive ways to get out of the hole and prepare for the race that is life. Make believe all is our fault and start addressing one small thing at the time.
Myself, I am still trying to figure it all out. But your post helped me to just get on with it and just address my burnout feelings. Hope this helps you as well.
