I travel regularly for work, but my husband doesn’t. We make it work with a lot of prep. When I’m going out of town, freezer meals are made, lunches are pre packed, etc. my kids are in daycare, so he does need to leave work by a specific time to get them. He gives his team a heads up. Honestly it’s way easier with an infant. Wait until they’re bigger and they have more places to go, give you a hard time and talk back.
Personally, I’d see how it goes before either changes jobs. You’ve totally got this.
My husband is a consultant and travels for work regularly. I set expectations with my team that I will not be able to travel for work. It is definitely hard to be a single parent for most of the working week and still be your best self at work. Consider getting evening help if you can afford it or from family if they live close by. Have your husband negotiate for lesser travel if that’s an option. As a working mom, it’s so important for your partner to support you equally in parenting activities, so make sure you discuss this clearly with your partner on what changes you both need to make.
So many factors to consider: do you have family nearby that can help out, do you anticipate hiring FT nanny or daycare? How much do you anticipate travel? Why consulting vs something perhaps more local? Since it’s your first you may not be able to answer a lot of these questions yet so seems a strange time to consider a longer distance/more demanding schedule. Just to consider holding off those big decisions until after August.
How much does your account require travel?
My husband travels a lot. I was firm with my teams about not traveling when I returned to work. They dealt and I Skyped in. When my baby turned about 10 months the morning routine started feeling normal. She’s older now and I do feel comfortable leaving overnight. I would do my best to try not to worry about things at work until you return. After you become a mom your brain changes, in a good way. For my Mom friends and I, we see work a little differently. I can’t speak for everyone else though. Congratulations!
My husband and I both have global roles and travel a bit for work domestically and internationally. We both try to put some loose groundwork on no travel for about 4-6 weeks before baby born; and then for the first 3-4 mos after baby arrives if we can. We do full time daycare and recently added in a sitter to help with pick ups end of day, later work nights, and the occasional overnight, since our travel has ramped up even more in the last six months. But or kids are 3.5 and 1... when they were baby babies. I traveled less or relied on family a bit more. I would say if you think you can together stick to some initial ground rules and have either family or sitter support to help you out when things get tougher that can work. Happy to chat more!
Yes, and you will get through it. Did it without family nearby and it wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t the worst.
