It does suck but, it's the world you/we live in. I still feel guilty for (a) leaving before my staff even though I got there earlier and (b) taking any PTO. It's quite ridiculous.
^Funny the partner says "it's the world we live in." Why don't you work to change it if it is "quite ridiculous[?]"
Because the "world we live in" lines the partner's pocket 😛
I guess the firm's argument would be that vacation and holiday time is considered in the calculation of the target utilization %. Still, I feel you, OP. Utilization is such a bullshit metric- it punishes efficiency.
Trust me, no one in my firm gives a shit at what I have to say. Small market line partners are the lowest...
To set the record straight, utilization DOES include vacation in the denominator but it EXCLUDES holidays. With that being said, taking vacation impacts everybody the same, so why are you complaining? If you saved up for a while and expect to take the maximum vacation all at once when you are trying to get promoted, then that's just poor planning.
I don't believe vacation impacts utilization rate. Util is based on available hours as the denominator and vacation hours aren't included towards available hours.
Taking your vacation will have no impact on a promotion. Promotion is all about the framework.
Utilization @ 70% here. Got promoted w/o issues.
Take your PTO because you could die before that promotion comes around. If your utilization is too low it's because of the work you've done when you're assigned or the situations you've been put in by the partners/managers or some combination of the two.
@pwc3 I'm pretty sure vacay hours are factored into the denominator. I think its just holidays that aren't included. My team is very anti vacation because it affects our util rate negatively. I also work in a group where we have to really strive to get 80-85% util for promo, so taking vacay here and there really affects it.
No, vacation hours do not impact utilization for sure. I have seen number of utilization calculations where it is equal to unassigned hours divided to available hours excluding vacation and holidays. Very easy to check with your office RMO or just call PwC help.
100% sure that vacation and training is part of the utilization calculation. Holiday is not.
^What firm are you at?
PwC1 Not B4. But international.
PwC6 are you sure? Just go and check my metrics for the definition of utilization. It exclude both vacation, holidays and even training time.
What's your utilization and charge hour target for the year? Mine is 77% as a manager and I'm easily going to meet that even with PTO of 4 - 6 weeks
Just go to my metrics and check
Does no one pay attention to anything they say in the million meetings we have about utilization? Vacation absolutely negatively affects your utilization
