Major General Bob E. Livingston?
No relation. My first name is General and it's a family name.
Yes, what are you looking to do?
I would like something where I can experience multiple sides of hr so that I can figure out what I like.. I am in the Hampton roads area in Virginia. I guess I should know what I want but that isn't really taught to you as you transition. Most think that you will just go into your technical field and the experience translates well. The goal is to run a hr department. Thanks for responding.
Are you on LinkedIn? HR is ripe with vets
Yes I am on linked in, with the looking for work banner and everything lol. May not be using it properly though because I don't have anyone reaching out other than people that want to manage my money or mlm groups smh.
Network on linkedin
Thanks for that.
I've heard of a lot of people who have done this. What time of HR roles are you looking at?
I want something that will give me exposure to as many hr facets as possible. Then I can say which area I prefer. I also would like to get paid well and I see that pay seems to be all over the place when looking at salary.com glassdoor.com indeed.com so I really don't have a real picture on what wage is expected at each level. Thanks for responding.
There are definitely ex-military folks working as recruiters in tech companies who might be able to give you a run-down of what People Operations and HR look like inside different companies.
Not sure on higher level leaders within those orgs with military backgrounds
Not necessarily because they’re ex-military. My (recent) approach was this—
My recommendation to get some start points:
1) Get LinkedIn premium. You can usually get a free trial
2) Search the job title you’re looking for. Use the “people” tab (so you get people not jobs or companies)
2b) filter “current company” by companies you’d like to work at (add them all)
2c) filter for “previous company” = Army, Navy, etc,
2d) filter “school” = anywhere you’ve gone
Networking:
- Send a note (LinkedIn premium helps for word limit here) that:
1) mentions your connection (eg the military)
2) 2-3 specific questions you’d like to ask them
3) attach a resume for context
4) request to chat for 20 minutes
If they agree to talk, make sure to ask for 1-2 more people in their network to talk to. Maybe you’ll get a referral or someone will have an opening at their company or you’ll get good info on what types of questions to ask
There are definitely a lot of career opportunities! One thing I would suggest is to pay close attention to your resume!
1-2 pages, lots of metrics. Look up the Google XYZ format of phrasing things. Use the Stanford GSB / Harvard business school format for clarity. Cut all that jargon and military stuff out
Also, do not think you are owed anything for being a veteran. I’ve seen this so many times and unfortunately veterans still have to earn their keep in the corporate world.
Stanford has an exec education program for vetts in executive education - check if out
I did. It wasn't too long after I left that I found a job as a talent acquisition coordinator. I love what I am doing and I pushed myself until I finally got my current postition.
Would you share your military background and how you got your start? That may be beneficial to me. Thank you.
Alright, completely unrelated to this post but…. When I was in boot camp (navy) we had someone with the last name Admiral; everytime a letter was received for Admiral X, the drill instructors would give him soooooo much shit 🤣
Is anyone here in the Hampton roads area or have associates in the Hampton roads area that I could talk to and network with for info/job. I see some big name companies in the response, it would awesome to get more info if you would like.
