The Texas bar has something called C-bar that has more transactional/corporate type pro bono projects and there are generally several posted there. Your state might have similar. Simple ones aren’t bad, but there can be hidden complexities if the nonprofit is giving grants or is healthcare related. It usually involves drafting formation and operating docs so I’ll generally partner with a corporate atty, but if its a simple org those shouldn’t be too hard either.

I do a few pro bono innocent spouse matters a year. The local law school clinic refers them to me if too complex for them to take on, if the client barely exceeds the clinic’s income threshold or they just don’t have the bandwidth to take it on.

Where are you located? I’ve found it’s fairly specific to the location. But I just did one yesterday that the ABA held which was nationwide. It was an IRS tax settlement day and it was pretty good. Agree with all of the above though, and if you’re in or around MA I can give you some tips.

like

The aba one most recently was all virtual. I imagine it will be that way forever now, clients like it, it gets more volunteers willing to do it, and honestly the irs also probably prefers it.

We want to find a career that allows her to work remote or that at least gives her a better work life balance so that she can see her kids grow up. I have read all the books but want some hands on experience on the property management side. How could I best leverage my skills for a role in this, and what should my expectations be for negotiation in compensation?

How do you handle the next day after being up until 4am the night before on a deal? My other deal teams don’t know I was up so late, but obviously I’m going to be much slower in the morning. It sounds whiny to say “sorry for the delay I was up all night” when everyone else is also so busy...

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

What is a reasonable pay increase + bonus? This will be my first pay increase. I make 70k and I will be starting my second year at big law (immigration). I had 2 years of prior experience before joining the firm. My manager rated me highest in all areas and mentioned she recommended me for promotion but it may not happen until next cycle since there are limited number of promotions to give. I will get a pay increase regardless so I want to negotiate in case I don’t get a “good” increase.
