Is there such thing as a medical director that doesn’t have an MD?
I will tell you having a medical director that is not an MD will not go over well with physicians
I don’t think a Medical Director without a MD/DO exists. Not even in pharma. Maybe you’re thinking clinical director? Medical = physician. Healthcare/clinical = physician or any of the other ancillary professions.
Agree with COO1
My dad was a hospital administrator for 35 years with no MD. MDs dont really help you in those roles at all.
There’s a difference between hospital administrators and medical directors. The OP was asking about medical directors.
Yes
I've looked but it seems rare. Most seem to want someone with a nurse or doctor degree. Maybe at a smaller hospital?
Yes most require a medical related degree. Sorry, should have specified, I have a PharmD
My husband is an MD so I’m aware. My dads title was Medical Center Director. He was the ceo of the hospital. Department directors are always physicians as far as I know.
CEOs of hospitals are usually not called Medical Directors (maybe at local or smaller hospitals)
There are Medical Directors on units (MDs typically) and there may also be Admin Directors by unit (which are usually business non medical, but sometimes maybe clinical)
CMOs (which are Chief Medical Officers- at most larger systems) are almost always MDs/DOs not PharmDs (99% of time)
CEOs do not have to have MD although some do. Have seen mixture of no masters degree to MD, MBA, MS, Nursing, MHA, MPH etc. Really dependent on hospitals size and system.
Worked at 3 top 10 hospitals in-house, and consulted for several othe major and regional systems. This applies to almost every system I have seen or worked at.
Just to follow that up you maybe thinking of Administrative Director
