Guys this isn’t some HR secret. Full utilization is chargeable hours / 2080. Effective utilization is chargeable hours / 2080 - Vacation/holidays/sick days/leave.
This question disappoints me. Utilization is not a relevant consideration when taking a sick day. The only question should be whether you or someone you love needs you to take a day off in the interest of health.
^ sick days and vacation ALWAYS hurt utilization. I had HR admit it to me during meeting.
Yeah screw utilization. The question is, can you manipulate it? I think it totally depends on how nosy and annoying your direct team can be. Honestly, as a manager, I couldn't care less if you put your sick days as vacation days. Deloitte is at 25 flat PTO (they disregard sick vs personal days), so why the hell should EY care that much. As long as your team doesn't have a stick up their butts and you're not blatantly taking advantage, you should be fine. (My views do not represent actual EY policy)
EY recently changed the utilization metrics so that vacation and sick days do not affect the utilization used in year end reviews. At least they told everyone they did and it appears they did in all reports.
The company still uses full utilization as a key metric for financial purposes. Therefore they care about that one the most.
Why does utilization matter...if you have to ask then you need to watch the video on “how we make money,” since we make money solely by the sale of time.
Also, why is EY so crazy about utilization ?
Anything you’re charging that isn’t billable to a client hurts utilization pretty much haha
Who cares if they care about full utilization. Just take your PTO and sick days too. It’s a benefit. Also- at Deloitte they don’t differentiate between sick day and PTO- you have like 5 weeks or PTO/sick days but when you take a day off, you just put PTO.
Deloitte just wanted me to meet my chargable hour goals for the year. EY wants like 85% utilization a week? How I am I supposed to do that when it's slow AF or if I'm at training?
Yep sick days hurt utilization. They want as many chargeable hours out of you as possible.
I didn’t think they hurt utilization...
They care about utilization bc higher utilization increases EY revenue
Effective utilization has been the key measure for the last 2-3 years. They used to care more about full and gave up on it. So your sick days don't hurt it. I think they only keep tabs on sick days to the extent you use more than allotted. There's now a tab in My People Link to track them, along with vacation
Training hurts utilization too
