I don't know why you think this is about you, your skin color, and your identity. It isn't.
I would actually start very young.
There's all sorts of ways to discuss DEI with little kids.
The dogs we see at Target are guide dogs in training. They are working and when we see a guide dog, we don't interrupt their work.
Those scooters at the store are for people who have a difficult time buying groceries because of health issues. We're healthy and don't need them. It would be rude to use a cart we don't need.
Oh, your classmate doesn't celebrate Christmas? That's fine. I bet they have some other, interesting things they do at other times instead.
Why? My kids were raised to accept everyone's beliefs from day one, and we grew up in a very diverse area, so people that were very different than them was normal. There's no reason to have a special discussion about DEI any more than there is a need to tell them not to kill or steal.
I tell my child to not be defined by their skin color and put their best foot forward in all situations and endeavors…is that the same thing?
