When I did criminal law, I had this issue with one of our clients and his mother/sister calling every day. Attorney told me to get them to stop because he was getting annoyed with them.

I reviewed the retainer and explained to them that communications every day was eating out of their $7,000 retainer and that I suggested that it was better spent for motion drafting etc. and that I'd update them when we had updates but if they really had a question to ask, to just email it instead. To drive the point home, I explained that with my billing rate being $175/hr, if we had a half hour long conversation - they'd be charged almost $90 for it and that if it was the partner - they'd be paying $250 as his rate was $500/hr.

Putting the frustration in this sort of language really helped as they limited their communications to emails every once in awhile after that as I was communicative with them for every step of the way.

The hostility on my team is rough. We have a yeller. I walked by her room the other day. She was screaming across the room at a student, "you have to be kind to get kindness." Seriously, those were her words in a loud, berating, angry tone. Our admin has asked that we not report these. We are to talk to the teacher. She has yelled at me and other adults. Admin has to know she treats the kids this way too. One teacher has to work with her door closed to not hear the yelling all day.

I worked at LinkedIn and one of the senior leaders was sharing screen during a meeting. The conversation shifted but the leader didn’t stop sharing screen. Needless to say this leader was very distracted by other things on our call.

What are folks thoughts on nuclear power? I have heard there are many detractors. Before getting into consulting, I was trained to operate a nuclear power plant on a submarine and learned about this excellent source of energy.

The main issues I see with it are the initial upfront costs to setup (with the cheapest generation costs thereafter), and disposal of nuclear waste (which some new technologies are being developed to reuse the waste in a different kind of reactor).

Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime. Curious if anyone has any second businesses that require about 20 hours a week. Not looking for passive income or franchise ideas though.

I work at a small, 3 lawyer firm. One of the lawyers is not barred in the state we practice. Because of this, the managing attorney has been having him draft motions and other legal documents and use my name and bar number and having me file them because I will have to appear in court for the matter. Is this normal? I am not provided time to review the materials before I file them so I end up working longer days because I am nervous to file something using my name and bar number.

Managing attorneys in small firms - how much do you make?

I'm in South Florida. Currently a 6 year associate at a small firm (~12 attorneys, 55 staff). Making a move towards Managing Attorney position that they are considering hiring from outside the firm for. I'm going to make the case that they should promote from within and give me the position. I'm objectively a good candidate for it. Question is... what's a good salary for that position? What do you make? Thanks.

The based salary is low $120k. Firm is in Tx. I’d love to hear your comments.
