No, because many of them are afraid to have that conversation. It’s most likely not from place of disregard, but more likely from a place of being uncomfortable.

Probably not because they are likely the norm. I would (and did) have a frank conversation with them.
Push the conversation it will help you read them better
Force the conversation out of them, put a meeting on their calendar and you go in with the issues or topics you want to discuss. Set up a recurring meeting and if they keep canceling or rescheduling, you might have to change them. They can be changed anytime so do not be afraid. In PA world, they are the managers of your career but they do not tell or underscore that importance to you so we take it for granted. If you have to change, find someone who you can connect with and interview them before, have a feel of them before you ask for the switch.
