For those that have been out of work for 2+ months (Laid off, voluntarily left or fired), how did you pitch the gap to potential employers? Were larger companies less willing to hire you?

And I just tried to apply to 3-5 jobs a day. Sometimes they weren't jobs that I thought would be perfect--but I just went with the volume strategy

First thing I did (after soul searching) was to come up with a very clear, concise, 1 sentence reason for why I was out of work. My explanation was similar to D1.

If you answer confidently and clearly it’s not usually an issue. If you drag it out, stumble through the answer, and act self conscious it will only set off red flags

I was laid off from my last job because of a reorg. My whole department was let go. I actually was out of work about 3 months and then was hired by Deloitte. I didn't really pitch the gap at all--and even though I had a clear "end date" on my resume from my last employee, a lot of companies still asked me if I was working there. It wasn't really an issue. And if asked I always explained that there was a reorg. No big deal. Have you been facing issues?

What did you find to be the most effective strategy for getting interviews?

Be honest about what happened; people smell through any dishonesty and that’s a disqualifier more than the actual situation.

Thanks guys. Very helpful insight.

@D1 Not facing issues necessarily but I do have a few more questions about the strategy you employed. do you have a burner? I can email you. I appreciate it!

What’s the best way to negotiate more money during a contract to FTE conversion? My manager and I had the conversion convo today and he said he’d like to convert me immediately and took the action item to do so. In terms of comp he said they should already have what I’m expecting but I don’t think I communicated any FTE number to my contracting company. In this job market with all the layoffs, should I count my blessings and take what I can get or is there wiggle room.
