It’s not our fault everyone is dropping like flies and they can’t hire people fast enough. Why should we work for 55 hours/wk to make up for their incompetence at managing retention? The entire thing is a joke and all it will do is further erode the current situation.
Should we expect to work some long weeks? Absolutely, it’s the consulting industry and you gotta go all out on many occasions. Every single week is unreasonable though and you should compensate with more PTO to keep a healthy mindset otherwise you’ll start to burn out.

Right and also if I’m working long hours and doing consulting work for the love of god PAY ME MORE.

Judging by the answers here I think it says a lot about our resourcing and work allocation. There are a lot of people being CRUSHED by their workload right now while others are actively asking for work. People hoard good staff and seniors (I know I am guilty of it too).
Exactly who’s communicated a 55 hour/week expectation within Forensics? First I’m hearing of it.
MD in Atlanta emailed with the expectation of 50 hours.

A bunch of randos on an anon app is not canon!
Yeah I don’t work 55 hours
It is a thing where I work - locally and field of work, and we don‘t get additional resources so we could give our people a break, because apparently everyone is fully booked. We wouldn‘t even dare to try and ask, if our people weren’t at the 50-55 minimum on average weekly. - btw, I am not IFCS - but very concerned about my team
EY5 we do have a bit more than some other organizations but not by a significant margin. It's an unavoidable part of consulting. It's interesting how many complain about this but then want to make m, sm or ppmd and don't understand that's what you spend a significant portion of your time on. Might as well get efficient at it as early on in your career as possible.
I have not come even close to working 55 hours every week despite asking for work when I have spare time, and I have never heard of this rule before. Not sure this is a rule...
Didn’t know this was a continued thing. I haven’t worked 55 hours like a single time this year. Must be an I&C thing?
It's not a thing, unless people aren't tracking their hours. There aren't many who even averaged 45 hours effective utilization let alone 55
