vieques is beautiful, has bioluminescent water, but takes long ferry to get there so might be tight
You could try and book bio bay tour in Fajardo. It's manageable if you have a car rental.
You should stick to San Juan for 3 nights.
IMO, Vieques needs at least two full days by itself, lots to see and do there. If you’re into hiking/nature, check out el yunque forest which is not far from San Juan
Hey OP - I was there for 4 nights and here’s how I split my time (and where I wish I spent more/less time). Note - I rented a car for the duration of my trip.
Day 1- My flight was to/returning from Aguadilla Pueblo, which is about 2h away from San Juan but has really nice beaches and is known for its surfing/water sports. I spent a day here but wish I spent more time.
Day 2 - Old San Juan is super cute and can take up an entire day to go through; I didn’t care much for the beaches in San Juan though to be honest. It was good vibes but the water was meh. 1 day was probably ok for me here, but I didn’t get to see everything (Bacardi factory, go to the giant mall, etc.)
Day 3 - Vieques is beautiful - the ferry takes about an hour or so, but don’t count on it leaving on time. It was an hour late coming/going for me (turning it into 2h each way). The ferry is fairly cheap though ($2 or so each way). There’s a couple of different beaches there so you could definitely make a day trip out of it if you go super early in the morning, you just wouldn’t see everything there. You need to rent a vehicle here to get around the beaches as they’re quite far from each other. I wish I spent more time here as well.
Day 4 - El Yunque is also fun, but took up an entire day. It took me from 10am to 5pm to do the full scenic hike to the top and down (includes stopping by towers there, taking pics, going into waterfalls, etc.). Drove back to Aguadilla after this to catch my flight.
Enjoy - and definitely try their mofongo dish!
Thanks for such a detailed itinerary.
