You just tell them you changed your mind. Retention bonus is just bonus (you also should read the fine print about the retention bonus. There will be clawback). I rather go to deloitte for better base pay.

That retention bonus might seem sweet, but it's meaningless if they've been underpaying you. The house will still come out ahead.
If money is the only reason you considered leaving, then okay, maybe stay for the thicc slice of cheese. If you have other reason besides the money, those have not changed.
I agree with SM1. If there are other issues that prompted you to search for another job, you will want to discuss those issues and get them addressed now.

As thick as Tim Ryan.
Probably be added to do not hire list at Deloitte, but nothing else.

The best part
When I got my counter they offered $15k in March if I stayed through busy season. They’d also help me find another job if I wanted. What they didn’t mention was that the bonus had to be repaid if I left within 12 months.

D2. It’s very common. Have had several coworkers transition to law firms and/or in-house with help from partners when asked.

Why did PWC have to wait to give you more money ? It’s kinda like withholding money from you when you deserved it. I would ask deloitte if they can give you more of a sign on bonus or if your in audit them gave out a 35k retention bonus see if you can negotiate
Base salary increase is typically better to go with. If you think about it, a bonus is a one time thing, it comes it goes. But with a base salary increase, it’ll always be there and the exponential growth it’ll have in the future (since your future raises and bonuses will be a % of your base salary) is usually worth more than a one time payment. But just my opinion
This is your PwC partner here. Hope you make the right decision Tim.
Don't forget about the thiccc tax on that bonus
It would work out to be the same after tax whether it’s salary or bonus
You also let pwc know you’re willing to leave and they’ll keep that in mind
No, just tell them nvm
It’s fine. It’s not like they’re going to sue you and force you to accept the offer! Worst thing that happens is they hesitate to grant you an interview in the future because they don’t want to waste their time if they think you’re just trying to get a competing offer to show your current employer. But even that isn’t all that likely. Either way, that’s a potential problem for future you. Don’t worry about it.
Bonus are great but it’s not long term. Any raise you get in the future will be more money. Might be better to take the high salary unless you need extra cash now
I almost left from PwC to Deloitte when I was a senior. I was not countered with a retention bonus, but a early promotion. I had already verbally accepted the offer and this was in my last meeting to put in my notice expecting to be walked out. I ended up staying, got the promotion and overall have been very happy with the decision as well as the economic difference between if I had gone and my increased pay from the promotion, manager milestone, etc.
When I left, they offered me 30k but it came with a 2 year clawback lol
I got the same counter recently. Like I can't see staying 1 tax season and the bonus came with a two year clawback, why do they think that's attractive?
I’m a week you won’t even think about this the same way.
If you decided to stay there might be a stigma that your willing to leave (ask if this damages the relationship?) for money and also your performance bonus / base increase next CRT may be adjusted if they compensate you now (I would get confirmation that it does not). If you go to the other side you might have to rebuild your relationships but at least there is no stigma/tension in the relationship that your gonna leave. Just might want to think how they could screw your later on is all.

Why’d you sign before bringing numbers to your partner unless you were sure of leaving? Like others stated, contract really means nothing. They won’t hold you to anything.
