Ok Chicken Little. The sky's not falling yet. Even the article implies it's going to be a while when it mentions the system had to get more accurate. Then it's got to gain FDA, AMA, and probably other approvals. Even then it's likely cheaper to continue hiring a human than pay for the machine plus operator. The woman likely has a long career ahead of her before needing to worry.
automation, and how it could eliminate jobs in her field. Have always had a tough time dealing with the idea that people fail.
I think all of our jobs will eventually be automated - Watson is smart enough to think critically so white collar (us) isn't necessarily safe either. In the short term, I think her job will be safe. Doctors and those in medical bring an element of humanity that we are used to/crave, it's a customer-facing job. The jobs in jeopardy in the short term are ones that don't require human interaction (like back office or manufacturing). I hope you feel better, OP!
That mom is likely tough enough to take honest career advice from you, and smart enough to change careers when needed. You'll do her a favor by having an open conversation.
So you're gonna have a machine run an ultrasound machine? I'm pretty sure her job will still exist for a while.
Reading ultrasound reports is the value add part of their job, that is something that can be automated.
If I were a prospective parent, I'd want a human being, especially a mother who has personally gone through the experience, walking me through the results of the ultrasound.
Anyway OP, sorry to show some sass. I'm just not thrilled at having to wake up early tomorrow for a Tues-Fri week (barf). Anyway - You seem like a good person (since you're concerned for the mom), but you might be a letting yourself feeling down creep into other things! Cheer up! YouTube "golden retriever puppies". That usually gets me right up!
I'm pretty sure my wife wouldn't have wanted a robot handling the ultrasound wand when they were looking at our kids in utero. The Dr's job may be more at risk than the technician's. Agree with KPMG1
So radiologists basically are out of jobs too? Try again.

Want to hear something slightly sadder (not really)? My mom always wanted my sister and I to become x-ray techs so that we would have job security. :/
Machines are better at classifying standard objects waaay better. But in life and death we shouldn't allow machines to have the final say. Always should have a human component to it.
