agency, asking for a reco.
I’ll help but I’m having a hard time being gracious about it.
I wouldn’t help, and I’d explain exactly why. People need to learn to support each other in this industry. It’s not a one-way street. Yes it’s awkward to talk to someone who got laid off. But people need to grow up.
That was my thinking and yes I’m also calculating enough to know that it’s smart to be nice to everyone because you never know where they might end up.
I would just say you’ll help then not help. Don’t mess with karma or who knows what’ll happen!
TBH they don’t have the right skills for this place. But I’m going to connect them to another place, because I’m trying to be the better person. And we’ve all had shitty luck.
Happened to me when I got laid off. One person reached out, but silence from everyone else.
That’s so shitty, what’s the shop? Mind giving me a rec?
Eh I had an old account guy who treated me like dirt when I worked on his team. Every year he reaches out and I'm just like "delete" or once in a while tell him there aren't any openings.
It's weird. I got laid off and only heard from a few people. I was pissed. Now my old company just laid off a bunch of people and it's awkward to reach out. IDK why, but I don't know what to say. I now understand more why people didn't reach out to me. It feels awkward.
Yeah I get that it’s awkward, I’ve been on both ends.,
A lot of people did reach out, some with a ‘hope you’re doing ok’ which is more that sufficient and which is is why I noticed that this person didn’t.
And I wonder if they have the awareness to even think about the fact that the first time we’ve talked in months is them asking for help...if so I would think that’s more awkward.
I had this exact thing happen to me a few months ago. This person was my partner and it really upset me. He didn't even return my texts. So I didn't jump through hoops to get his resume to HR. I passed it along and figured that was enough.
If it were my partner I would’ve pretended I never received it.
OP, distinction please: you got laid off, contacted this person, and they ignored you? Or you got laid off and they didn’t notice and reach out first?
I won’t anymore because they didn’t follow up on the intro I made for them. It’s embarrassing.
