I was just laid off too so same boat! I wouldn’t worry about your reaction to the news as long as you don’t burn the place down on your way out you’re good. I don’t think you have to get into it in interviews just say you’re freelancing looking for a new opportunity, bc in all honesty that’s what you’ll be doing. DON’T go in on your old agency in interviews and show your ass, just focus on what you want out of your new agency (other than being gainfully employed 😂). I’ve been spending my time with my head down updating my book and trying to come up with side projects. That could be the thing to get your foot in the door and necessity is the mother of invention 🤷🏻♀️. I normally try to stay away from creative contract companies since they eat a good chunk of your rate but they help pay the bills and a lot of them offer healthcare. Don’t get down on yourself for settling for something temporary to pay the bills. It doesn’t have to go on your resume. It’s not Mr. Right, it’s Mr. Right now. Don’t forget to do little things for yourself to keep from going crazy. Go explore a new part of the city. Emil recruiters/work on your book from a new cafe. And remember, getting laid off is not a reflection of you, it’s a reflection of your company. You’ve got this and you’re not alone in it!
I’ve been fired multiple times in my career. Not laid off. Each time due to personal conflicts in values and ethics with my direct superior. I choose to stand by my values. So even though it hurts when it happens and is hard to get back up, I remind myself it was my choice to stick to my guns and make myself vulnerable. And we have to live by our choices and take responsibility for them.
You have guts. 👍 I feel it’s often petty reasons too.
Laid off. Fired. They both suck. But do what's right for you during your down time. See friends. See family. See a movie. Over eat pancakes. Run. It'll turn around. AND TRY NOT TO BE TOO HARD ON YOURSELF. Easier said than done tho
Also get all your doctors/dentist appts in as soon as possible afterwards while you still have sweet sweet corporate health insurance
Been there a few times. It’s never easy. But I will give you one piece of very valuable advice: take a few weeks off and reset.
I know that advice seems so impossible right after a lay-off but it’s so important. Go on that trip to Yosemite. Take a long weekend to the Rockies. Whatever you want to do, do it. I’d recommend somewhere in nature that forces you away from your computer. Maybe with some best friends. Or maybe you just go see your family.
And remember that this is just a stepping stone. It’s not permanent. And there’s NO SHAME in taking unemployment.
Use Linked In every morning like your good old newspaper classifieds. Upgrade to premium and send out those cold emails to the recruiters of the shops you’ve been dreaming about. What’s the worst that could happen!
Sending warm vibes to all those going through this. You got this
Use any downtime constructively to work on your book, exercise, read widely, sort out your apartment or your finances. Call on your acquaintances in interesting companies just to visit their offices and learn. Volunteer for an industry related thing. The point is to come back stronger, like an athlete coming back from injury. And good luck to you.
Being laid off and having your employment terminated for cause are two different things.
Layoffs often come with no notice, and are almost impossible to fight.
CD1 No probation or warning needed for a layoff
@CD1 you work in an “at will” state unless you’re in Montana. That means an employer can fire you for absolutely anything. Or nothing
Happened to me twice because of the agency losing clients. My biggest piece of advice is to *negotiate* the terms (ask for more severance and to extend your health insurance). You have nothing to lose and it worked out in my favor after learning the hard way the first time.
Hi sorry about your layoff... in addition to not signing the paperwork, if you have the opportunity have an attorney look at... last time I got laid off I showed an attorney and he found some things that I shouldn’t agree to... he only charged me 100 dollars, but it saved me thousands
It may be the best thing that ever happens to you. Believe that and it will be. When one door shuts another opens. Get excited about what awaits you not scared of the unknown.
It’s interesting that people are saying to essentially lie in the interview about termination. I got laid off this year for the first time in my 20 year career.interviewers inevitably ask, and I answer honestly while quickly saying I’m excited for new opportunities, the agency wasn’t healthy. I was far from the only victim...and definitely felt stabbed in the back, as I worked really hard, was loved by my team and my clients, and so on. But I definitely don’t get into it. Will admit, the first time an interviewer asked the question it did throw me off and there was a palpable shift in my confidence — at the time it was still so raw. But I handle pretty welll now and am pretty far down the process with a highly respected agency. Anyway, curious if people’s thoughts here.
CD the best warning side at our level is an increase in shitty smaller projects (if any projects at all), limited account time, and a LOT of down time. Good luck
@CD1 I was laid off this year with happy clients, happy ecds, a project in pre-production and after winning a lion less than a year earlier. But that doesn't matter when the overall agency isn't healthy. Holding company said what the number had to be and choices had to be made. Bosses fought for me but it was basically too late. Not much of a way to give you warning in that situation.
Don’t let it think less of yourself, it was the most important thing to understand for me.
I've always been honest about it. It's so common in this industry that there's nothing to be ashamed of. Both times they offered positive recommendations and to help me find somewhere else to go. Everyone says you should expect to get laid-off 3x in your career.
I didn't see anyone suggesting to lie during interviews. But if so, I agree, don't do that. I also wouldn't bash your former agency. It's generally assumed it wasn't a good fit at the end. Just move forward.
☝🏻this. I’ve been laid off twice. Both times from jobs I wasn’t loving and didn’t get my ass in gear to quit first. Both times, I ended up in a much better place with more $$$ and better opportunity. Stay positive.
Not a fan of lying myself. Easy to get found out and makes you look like you’re not trustworthy. Also for me, I’m just bad at it anyway
When I interview someone and ask this question, I am looking for how they handle the response. Not the answer itself. Most of us have been laid off at least one time in our career. A smart hiring manager won’t use this against you. But they may be interested in how you tackle the answer. These is what really speaks volumes.
I’ll find out next week after the money meeting
