Won't say it's impossible, but it's extremely difficult - especially given the morale on the PwC lately and how many people will want to jump. While I understand there are probably many people capable enough to be in Strategy&, I don't believe everyone is entitled to making the jump solely because of the acquisition. It would be as if 2nd tier IB acquired an elite boutique (Evercore/ Lazard). Those from the "2nd tier" would need to work extremely hard to demonstrate that they are capable/ deserving of being staffed on the larger/ sexier deals. Again... Not impossible, and PwC is a solid firm, but I believe the top MBA path may be more rewarding (IB/Corp Dev/MBB) in the long run.
Wtf a1, did I just witness an adult shit out his mouth and vomit through his asshole?
I would say a couple of things there: 1) legacy strategy pwc team (mostly tice, ex prtm and diamond) have very good talent, recruited from mostly same schools. Training and expectations were sometimes different. 2) MC projects tend to be considerably longer. At least from what I have seen. And the skills from MC folks are more focused and deeper. We tend to staff MC peeps as experts in certain areas instead of having someone from S& reinvent the wheel. For example, in one project, we brought in sap experts from pwc or someone to run the pmo who had done that forever. They were amazing at that. 3) partners are different. Legacy pwc partners are more commercial, they know their shit inside out but tend to be very narrow on their expertise. Leg Booz folks (and most strategy folks I met from MBB) have a wider aperture but probably don't know everything to the detail but can infer (aka bullshit) the rest. Also they like the delivery and are a more integral part of the delivery. I personally have a lot of respect for pwc consultants. They are great at what they do but is different. Sometimes very different, sometimes not so much.
Rock the GMAT, get into a top MBA program, recruit into MBB.
@op there is a path but is difficult. If you can get into MBB, I would probably go for it. I love the firm, but there is no denying that branding and exits are better
P2 Are you saying that because there is no path from PwC into S&? Or are you suggesting that if I want to do strategy then MBB firms are just better fits?
P2 you are such a snob. Hiring at Lazard and Evercore is not merit-based. It is based on if your uncle works there. This is why Goldman is changing its hiring policy for analysts to be based more off of metrics and skype interviews.
OP, l had the opportunity to work on projects led by legacy strategy& team and legacy PWC team. I can honestly say, based on my experience, there is no difference in the level of competency, intelligence or overall talent between the two groups. It's even been noted by several people between the two groups that there are very little differences in the types of projects as well. The biggest difference is essentially the type of client. While strategy& may cater to larger clients, legacy PWC will still partner with smaller, more interesting clients. That's it
Not really. We go to market together. We do account planning together, we cross staff. Not sure what do you mean in terms of two entities.
@everyone - Sincere thanks for all the insight. @S&1, I'm definitely interested in connecting. My burner is pwcfishbowl12@gmail.com
I tried asking for a Strategy& project, no dice.
P2 that is what I am trying to do right now.
True strategy work (&what Strategy& is doing isn't really that yet which is why their rates are so low) is the same skill set but you need to look at the world very differently.
As a strategy guy my experience us most consultants, no matter how smart, don't. And it's more than a top flight MBA
*a full grown adult
Lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ let me know how your jump to Strategy goes P1. Good luck on the GMAT!
Op and P1, let me set up a burner and we can connect
Wow
I don't even get why we "acquired" them. We still work like 2 separate entities...
