I regret not doing it, and I’ll always look for that going forward at new jobs (still work there, not laid off or anything). I think that doing so shows HR that you aren’t messing around and are a serious person that looks right through their canned BS sales pitch.
Ask for what you think you’d need to be comfortable/secure. Only you know what that is. Negotiate from there. Don’t be meek when negotiating. Not asking is a sure-fire way to not get something.
Mid level: Start with 6-8 weeks, knowing they will negotiate down from there.
Just to help manage your expectations, at your level your leverage for asking for it is close to 0 and if it's a network agency, they have company policies about that which are pretty non negotiable. Also, many/most do 1 week per year served (not 2 weeks). All of that said, it's good to ask and it's good you're thinking in those terms already. Perhaps if we all did, it would result in a collective change.
All holding companies’ policies are highly negotiable. They tell you’re they’re ironclad in order to dissuade you from pushing. You can push. You can get them to add all kinds of things if they want you enough. If they don’t, then obviously you have little leverage.
^Guess it didn’t work for this guy
As an incoming ACD to a VERY large agency, I asked for and got 4 weeks severance written into the offer letter.
Most groups have a set standard they won’t adjust (example: 2 weeks per year of service), but you can and should negotiate for higher minimums upfront based on special circumstances like relocation for the job, newer shop (high risk), or suspiciously high turnover in ranks.
^ Please stop. This stuff only works after a certain seniority level.
@CD2 4 weeks per year employed?
Thank you both. How many weeks is reasonable? Mid level
Good luck. Unless you're C-Suite very little chance of that. And if u did get it, and word got out, it would mean nothing but problems for said agency.
6-8 weeks would be very generous in your position - that stopped happening 4-5 years ago because it costs massive overhead for agencies that are already struggling
Our agency network’s severance policy is 1 week per every year you worked for the company. (Been here 3 years? You get 3 weeks pay.)
It’s inhuman, but somehow pretty standard
