Has anyone here had the copper IUD for birth control? I can’t go back on hormonal birth control for a lot of reasons but I’m still not ready for any accidental pregnancies and I’m scared to try the copper IUD but it seems like my best option right now.

I’ve had it for 7 years now. No complaints but I recommend checking periodically with your doctor that it remains in the right location (ie get ultrasounds at your checkups)

Thank you so much! Sometimes google is a scary place and I was psyching myself out so wanted to hear from some real people who had experience with it

My cramps are worse since I’ve had mine and sometimes my flow is also heavier, but I generally like having it more than taking a pill.

like

I got it in May after having my second baby. My cramps are a bit worse and flow is heavier, but otherwise I haven’t had any issues at all. Definitely recommend trying it out.

I’ve had it about 4 years now and had heavier periods and cramps in the beginning and now don’t experience that as often. I love not thinking about birth control and being on a “normal” cycle so that I can get pregnant right away after taking it out.

Recently switched to the copper IUD (I have never had kids) Cramps after insertion were wicked for the first couple days. Regular cycle now, not too much different from my pre-pill teenage self 17 years ago—which was the last time I was OFF hormonal birth control. My sleep quality has improved since the switch. Overall, positive recommendation from me

I got mine a few years ago and love it. I do have a heavier flow and cramps, but that was my period pre-pill so I feel like I’ve returned to my “normal.” My cycle is super regular, too. I had cramps after insertion but advil helped and I have it checked during my annual visits to make sure the strings are in the right spot, it’s in the right spot. It took about a month for my body to regulate after insertion (so give it a minute if you have cramps for a few days) but now I can’t imagine any other kind of birth control. Went to planned parenthood, scrolled Instagram while it was placed (I told her I get nervous so she didn’t tell me anything until she said to take a deep breath during actual insertion), went home.

I’ve had it for about 6.5 years and I’d echo what most people here are saying. Insertion hurt a lot but it was only a few seconds. For the first year or so cramps were pretty bad and flow was heavy. Now cramps are mild to moderate and flow is heavy for 1-2 days. I also use diva cup and make sure to break seal before I start pulling it out. I only mention because diva cup is great for heavy flows.

Overall, i much prefer paragard over hormonal BC. I appreciate having a cycle (weird I know) and i have better athletic performance/recovery time. I also have clearer skin and less bloating.

No copper IUD advice. But my doc recently gave me Phexxi. And it's pretty awesome. https://www.phexxi.com/

It's non hormonal and my husband hardly noticed it.

Just FYI, for birth control that is self-administered is better to look at the imperfect use rate

I've used a copper IUD for over a decade. Period cramps can be more painful than usual but I thought it was worth continuing. Most of my friends did not experienced that. I got another one after having a kid and I have no side effects apart from a heavy flow. If you have insurance I think there's zero reason not to try it. Extremely effective, easy to remove, and insertion is only uncomfortable for a few seconds (unless you've had a child in which case you won't feel it).

like

Thank you! It’s really helpful to hear your experience with it. I just get a bit nervous with things like this and psych myself out, but I’m glad you’ve had an overall good experience!

My insertion hurt like hell. I have not had kids. My flow is a lot heavier and my cramps are worse but I still keep it because I couldn’t use hormonal birth control anymore.

I had the copper IUD for 4 years and loved it and recommend it highly. I actually did have it migrate and start to imbed in my uterine lining and it had to be removed early. Even though that wasn't optimal, it wasn't a horror story. I get regular check-ups and I told my OBGYN I was having some unusual spotting. She did an ultrasound, saw it had migrated and we removed it the next week. The removal was uncomfortable but not awful and the pain only lasts a minute or so. So if you get regular check-ups and pay attention to your body, it is really unlikely that it will migrate enough to cause some of the "horrors" people post about online.

Even after that experience I would still get another put in because it is truly awesome to not think about BC at all. My husband has gotten a vasectomy since my IUD was put in a few years ago so I'm not bothering but I absolutely would if I needed to.

like

Did you have any other symptoms when it migrated? Or just the spotting?

I got the copper IUD 3 years ago and so far I've had a great experience. I had Skyla and Mirena before and reacted horribly to the hormones. My first period after getting the copper IUD was heavy, but after that I've had pretty moderate to light periods. I also recommend FLO Vitamins. They've helped a TON with cramping and PMS to the point where I'm surprised when my period shows up because I don't have the pre-period symptoms anymore.

Had one for 5+ years before having kids. Wonderful product. Insertion sucks, taking it out sucks, but worth it to avoid the side effects of hormonal. My period was always quite light and got slightly heavier after IUD. Only negative was husband hated the string and I had to get it clipped
