The best time to do something is now. Imagine yourself asking the same question at 40 and what do you wish you would’ve done looking back?
I’ve gone back and forth. It can be done. Recommend more mature startups (like series c/d/e/f) for first jump out of corporate because any earlier may be major culture shock (ie no HR, no org chart, etc). Do it for experience, not equity. If you’re in healthcare - lots of innovation and disruption opportunity from the pirate ships sailing faster than cruise liner. But be ready for a ride.
Ehh pragmatically it really comes down to a couple of factors:
1) Are you supporting a family (kids or other dependents)?
2) does your startup role allow you to cover your expenses/lifestyle?
3) Do you have sufficient buffer to cover living expenses for several months in case you lose your job?
If the answers are Yes, No, No, I’d consider staying in the current role until your situation changes. Any other combination, I’d say go for it. That being said, it’s not like you can’t lose your job in a big company either.
I haven’t personally worked at a startup but I know a few. They rarely regret it.
No family. Pay is actually more. And I’d be fine living for a few mos in the event things tanked. Thanks for the response ! I think I’m going for it 👍
Do your homework thoroughly on a startup. I took the chance and it blew up on me.
Right before I joined, they hired someone else for the same position but gave them a higher title and changed my role. Couple months later hired a peer (without telling me or having me interview them) and split my duties up further. Fwiw, I was supposed to be in a “leadership” role to build a capability they did not have and suddenly had someone over me and someone next to me before I ever had a shot to prove my worth. I left quickly after this.
Have a friend who had a similar experience at another startup. Often times these companies hire us in aggressive growth mode but they lack a real vision for how that growth should happen (ie they committed to numbers for their financial backers). So when they see someone they think is talented they hire them and figure it will work out, but to the employee we are going for the role and the opportunity. When they change the role and opportunity, the job is way less desirable. So make sure your good with any small shop as your role can change fast and they will ask you to be “agile” regardless of your career goals or personal strengths.
