Wow this situation makes no sense since they can’t even argue it is for “team cohesion” or other such nonsense if all of your team meetings will be virtual anyway. Can you speak with your direct manager and ask them to advocate for you?
My direct manager has really tried to advocate for me. She brings it up in almost every conversation I have with her. She’s told my upper management that I’m a critical part of the team and that she would like for me to work remotely.

Why just you?
Give us some more details.
Something is missing here.
I have nothing else to add other than I just live close to the corporate building than the rest of my team. Everyone moved away or was hired remotely.
I’m not sure if I “negotiated”….my team continually bothered the higher ups who told us it wasn’t a priority. Then they realized how many bodies they will need and how much space they don’t have after we got rid of our 3rd party, so it became “we’re working on it”. After 4 months of no updates I found another job that was WFH, took it to my department director and was given the go-ahead within 48 hours and we scheduled my official “go home” date for 30 days later.
Well that’s awesome to hear! I’m glad it worked out for you. Space issues are definitely not a constraint for my business - the building is pretty empty. It’s wild to see. I truly do enjoy the job I have and my team. I hope this can work out for me. I just want the same opportunity as everyone else. :)

Don’t see this as an disadvantage. Look at it as an opportunity. I “volunteered” to head straight back to office when they reopened back in early 2021. I live the furtherest away in my entire team. Till today, I am the only person in my team (including my manager and supervisor) to be onsite full time. As a result, I am always “the right person, at the right time, at the right place.” My bonus and increment reflected my willingness to return to office. My pay raise this year was more than enough to cover my gas money 😆😆. On top of that, I get to set my own hours, come in whenever I want and leave when ever I want (I don’t abuse it as I support other department as well) and I do have the flexibility to work remotely if I really need to. If it’s not too bothersome for you to go onsite, then negotiate for part-time onsite and remote. You may bump into your CEO while you are in office one day and end up being your manager’s boss 🤣🤣. Make it an opportunity.
While I can appreciate this, I was originally approved remote in July of 2020. But there’s been a lot of shift in management since then. My team took advantage and moved away while they could. I purchased land so I could move away, but hadn’t begun the build process.
Sounds like unfairness to me and if they don’t have a legitimate reason why you are the only leader that has to be on site— sounds like there is an issue on upper management and I would address that pretty quickly and if they continue to be unfair, that pretty much means they will be unfair with other things that might potentially impact your career and future.
Let me ask you if your manager knows it’s unfair and they are advocating for you, have they really brought this up with that leader and shared the concerns of how this looks like and it’s honestly a bad representation of the company and their leadership team? Good luck , I hope all works out!

If you don’t show up what happens?
I’m sure they’d likely force me to resign or fire me.
