Has anyone tried orange wine? If so what were your thoughts?

Orange wines are incredibly drinkable, can take a chill, good with snacks and charcuterie, some have tannins and can stand up to pork or BBQ—deploy it like a natural Rose or Rossato. They’re sessionable, too (can be lighter in alcohol). I’ve noticed (as it’s a trend) that some restaurants carry “Orange wines” that are technically orange wines due to the most minimal skin contact, but they look and drink like white wines. Personally, I think the best expression of this type of wine should be natural and unfiltered (cloudy). Try it and report back!

Yeah def start with a single. Orange wines can run on a spectrum of “funkyness” so keep that in mind when selecting (this is an acquired taste, using a cheese analog, it could be on a scale from a hard Parmesan—savory and sweet, to a very blue cheese—funky). Maybe start with asking for a “natural orange wine that’s not too funky” and go from there.

Had an orange wine from Georgia (Caucuses) as part of a wine pairing at Noma in Copenhagen. Was a good way to ease into the category without a full commitment. Don’t think I would buy and go through a whole bottle because it was funky, but was nice to try something different.

Italian orange wines are good, many are quite local though

It wasn’t bad, felt a bit like a gimmick/fad

like

They can be great - but hard to make a generalization because 1. there’s not a lot of them that are easy to get ahold of, and 2. the category is almost meaninglessly broad. ATM it’s a bit of a dumping ground for anything that doesn’t fit into the classic white/red/rosé/(and sometimes green) categories.

Definitely worth your time to explore and see if you like what’s out there, just don’t let one or two bad experiences turn you off from the category as a whole.

like

Georgian skin contact white wines, sometimes called 'amber' wines, are a solid entry point to the category. No gimmicks, just a traditional way to make robust white wines that hold up to age.

Yes, huge fan of skin contact/amber wines. Making wine in qvevri, which is traditional for Amber wines (especially from Georgia), yields wonderful wines!

My personal favorite dessert wine is Vin Doux Naturel Rivesaltes. Hard as hell to find but the stuff will last forever and incredibly complex. You can open bottles from the ‘70s and be blown away. I’ll take it over Tokaji or Sauternes

Hi! I have worked in management roles in tech, mainly in analytics, for approximately 10 years. My TC has fluctuated (currently around 135K CAD), but it seems like it's relatively easy to breach the 100K bar, but hard to breach the 150K bar. I now work at the CBC, but I have worked in the private sector too. What is the most realistic way to move to 200K? 1) Continue moving the ladder to a VP position, 2) Switch to Pre-Sale, 3) Switch to Consulting, 4) Work from a U.S. company from Canada.
