Get a consult at derm and ask for their professional recommendation
My derm recommends the hospital’s own cosmetic surgeons (obviously). Hoping people here can share first hand, unbiased experience.
I follow a woman on insta @thedermwife (the wife of a derm) who just did a super thorough overview of the different kinds of lasers in her stories. Def do more research than that, but might be a good starting block.
Do you just have hyperpigmentation or also pitted acne scars? I’ve had treatment for both, but the type of treatment is largely dependent on your skin type and the type of acne scars.
I would go to either a facial plastic surgeon or dermatological surgeon to be honest. Eveyone has lasers these days, but I would go to someone who actually specializes in acne scar treatment and can show you before/after photos from some of their clients. I’m a skin type 3 and have been treating my acne scars for years now (I have rolling, boxcar, and icepick scars) and have tried fractional Erbium lasers, subscision, RF microneedling, TCA cross, plasma fibroblast, deep chemical peels, fillers, etc.
Fraxel (fractionated laser) can help treat certain atrophic acne scars, but not all depending on the depth of the scar. CO2 fractionated laser is still the gold standard (vs. an Erbium laser) but with a skin type 4, there can be a risk of hyperpigmentation with lasers (even with pre-treatment with something like Hydroquinone), so that’s something I’d also ask the doctor about. The most important thing in my opinion is to choose a doctor/surgeon who offers a multi-layered approach that treats all layers of the skin, and also understands that the treatment for each scar should be tailored based on the scar type. Also never hurts to get an opinion/consult from more that one doctor since everyone treats differently and has different experience levels with certain skin types.
