Have a coworker who volunteers for work but never ends up doing it. At what point does it make sense to go to the partner to address this? We’re both midlevels, and I’m tired of having to put in even more time every weekend to pick up his slack. If this were a junior, I’d address it with them first, but this is unacceptable from a fifth/sixth year.

Been in your shoes. Don’t make/take it personal of make them your enemy.

Before starting any assignment that the other volunteered for, I would flag to the midlevel and say that you’re checking on status to avoid double-work and that you can handle in case they haven’t gotten around to it. Partner doesn’t care - they just want it to get done.

When you send the assignment, make it clear to the partner that you completed it.

Why are you doing his work for him? If you split up the sections of a brief, for example, just send your sections and let partner follow up with the other guy about his.

like

In that case, talk to the midlevel. Point out how this has become a pattern and ask them what's going on. Depending on their answer, go to the partner.

I would talk to the mid-level first. See if s/he understands the issue. It might not be intentional. That said, if you have had that talk a couple times and it still isn’t going away, then I think it’s fair to mention it to the partner for this work. I would do that if after talking to them about how their volunteering for work has created more work for you routinely and they still don’t improve.

like

If you’re doing the work anyways and want to do it on your timeline, just come in over the top and say you’ll do it. You might even call the mid level to explain and he’ll probably be fine with that.

I've had this issue, there's a lot of good advice above. But you should start following up with this individual each time it happens and establish a paper trail. That way when you go to the partner you're able to establish this is a pattern. I would also just take them off the client email distribution that way at the very least he isn't volunteering for work and setting the client's expectations for work that you're doing. Then, if the problem continues go to the partners with the paper trail.

My title is technically Marketing Lead but I want to put Head of Marketing on my LinkedIn etc. I think of these titles as totally interchangeable—I just like the way the second one reads better. I know titles don’t really matter, but I’m battling a little bit of imposter syndrome.
