Left a job because of a micro-aggression? Who are you people?
Yes and no. I gave my notice, but actually didn’t have an exit interview because my CD forgot to notify HR - they only found out when I emailed them about a check the day before my last day. I didn’t have an issue with the CD, but the ACD who came from a old school fashion magazine environment so it was just ingrained in her to be catty and shit talk everyone. I worked late all the time, so I worked it out with my CD to come in a bit later than everyone (literally like 10:30 vs 9:30am) but she didn’t know that, and wrote down the time I came in everyday for 2 weeks. He told me and tossed out the paper. That was the weirdest thing I’ve ever encountered, especially coming from another woman.
People were getting laid off left and right so it was just a place full of anxiety and trying to shift the attention to other people.
It was crazy because it was in the middle of this big reorg and that catty ACD got laid off that same week I gave my notice.
If I left every company where I’ve experienced microaggressions as a queer woman then I’d never have a job.
Microaggressions against marginalized groups are rarely taken seriously by HR and they tend to be more subtle so you can’t claim discrimination and harassment either.
I got laid off from a job where I was invited to a meeting “by accident” because “we (my ethnicity) girls all look the same - too alike” which was said by Ecd - 8 ppl overheard but when HR questioned them they denied it to protect themselves from getting laid off too
HR isn’t for us. HR exists to shield the Company from its own employees.
Not very micro if it makes a person quit a job... Or, they’re incredibly soft.
Yes, I actually left my company because of this. While it may seem like “I’m soft” for leaving, the reality is that micro-aggressions are not professional, necessary, and are quite frustrating when you’re trying to produce great work. I thrive better in mature, open, and professional environments. I let HR know in my exit interview - I don’t know if it will have any impact, but I like being honest to people and myself.
