To explain further, my old degree no longer exists but the ministry of education has issued an official equivalency document stating the diploma I have is a bachelor’s degree. I provided this info to my future employer but they want Sterling to go back to my uni and ask why I say it’s a bachelor and they say it isn’t (even the uni website states my course is a bachelor degree). I am devastated as I had to resign already in order to be able to start the new job in Jan. My future is in the hands of some incompetent individual who doesn’t know what kind of degrees the uni they work for offers. Do you guys have any recommendations? What can I do to sort this out?
Did you provide the letter to the university, sterling and your new company?
Yes, I provided the official document along with screenshots of the page on the ministry of education’s website where it explains exactly that my L-12 diploma is a bachelor’s degree in linguistic mediation etc. But Sterling’s customer service is non existent, they just don’t reply so I don’t know if they read what I sent. I will also call my uni on Monday but if they’re not going to rectify their statement, I really don’t know what to do as Sterling won’t clear me unless what I stated matches what my uni says I have.
I’ve had many candidates fail background checks and I’ve failed them twice due to the way investigations are conducted by Background Check companies. At the end of the day it is the hiring manager and HR’s decision.
If HR hasn’t contacted you, which is standard procedure for all failed background checks, contact them asap. Provide all data and proof you have. If you convince them enough, they will pass you. It happens all the time.
That’s reassuring because my future boss is super professional and I think he would do the right thing for me. I didn’t know they had a say in the matter. I’ll definitely try this too.
Sterling only provides a report of the discrepancies. The hiring company has the ultimate decision
Sounds like a class action lawsuit.
Easy, already case law on it. They are impeding a candidates ability to obtain the roll.
This is purely civil, and while they may have liability shields in their contracts with the company they have a very tertiary one with the candidates.
Class action means that many people were wronged by an entity. Has nothing to do with legality.
Sue them!
I would reach out to the highest ranking person in the Jbi you can find and ask for assistance clarifying the issue. Maybe a higher ranking hr person too at sterling?
The problem with Sterling is it’s all automated, you never get to speak to or deal with any individual so I have no contacts there. I also don’t have any contacts within the HR department of my future employer. But if this isn’t sorted out in a day or two, I will escalate to the hiring manager and corporate recruiter.
