Go for it! WLB in industry has been amazing for me. Salary was better and atmosphere is way more relaxed. I went from PA Audit (mostly governmental) to Asst. Controller for a Paper Mill. Had no clue about a ton of manufacturing aside from a few inventories I participated in during my PA time. I have learned a lot but not knowing the industry really didn't slow me down. I still work on work papers, but it is just the same ones each month after close. My background helps a lot when it comes to getting our things together for our external auditors. Like anything else, it depends on the people you work with. I have a really great Controller who is a great teacher so that has been super helpful. Good luck with your decision!
This week, I have officially received an offer for the role. I've narrowed other public accounting offers down to 1 firm. However, I'm also very interested in this other opportunity, but wanted to understand people with similar experiences and if they thought it was worthwhile to go into a role with only accounting alignment and then learn thr industry aspect. Were you successful and happy with the job overall?
Personally, I love the opportunity, but i don't want to drag anyone down if my work suffers in the end.
Thanks for listening to my rambling.
Congrats on the offer! Yes, You can learn on the job. Public accounting has a lot of transferrable skills. I think the biggest thing for me that made the transition easy (after good salary) is having a good team/boss or good culture fit.
