RJ, women aren't the only ones asking that Q when they assume a new mgmt role. It's a common one for rookie Mgrs.
First you need to determine if you want to be a Supervisor or a Leader. As a Supervisor, authority is a bit more important if you're going to start with new rules, policies, etc. However, as a Leader, especially a SERVANT Leader, you can position yourself as someone who is there as a resource for your folks. Someone who is there to knock stuff out of their way so they can focus on what they're good at. Your authority will come naturally as they see you helping them accomplishing their goals. It will come as they see you holding others accountable for not representing the firm as it should be or not hitting firm expectations, of seeing you engage in the tough conversations with underperforming team members. You're always auditioning for your role. Be present. Be visible. Be engaged. Care. The authority will follow. They'll care when they see you care.
Instead of focusing in whether you feel you have authority or not, choose to focus and think about those you serve. If you're always focused on how you can serve others you wont be asking this question and you will have earned the authority. Self forgetfulness is at the heart of humble leadership and it freed you to enjoy life.. You will have to earn the authority not because you're a woman but because that's how it's done
As a women in leadership positions from a 2nd LT in the Army... VP at a bank and now an owner of my own business .... YOU DONT have Authority over people... they follow because you CARE about them and you have a vision....
You don’t need authority, I would recommend leading by example and share the work when possible. It’s a team effort.
If you are feeling like you don’t, then you are right. Your thoughts create your reality. I‘d recommend hiring a performance coach to help you reorient your self-perception. Until then, fake it till you make it. Be fearless!
I disrespect women and men equally.
But in all seriousness, your message and character is what matters. If you are not comfortable leading a team filled with predominantly 60-year-old white guys, then you took the wrong job.
What qualities do you like/admire in a manager? Mimic those.
