I have been told I interview very well and honestly if I can make it to an in person interview I get the job offer 9 times out of 10. I don't say that to brag but to let you know I didn't start that good. It's literally been practice, looking up possible questions and practicing out loud down to my posture. I also use the STAR method...present problem or hurdle, what I did to overcome it and what I learned from it. I also try to give varied examples from different jobs to personal experiences because ultimately they care how you answer not what you answer. I hope that helps. I'm also happy to help you practice just hit me up.

I have an ex colleague looking for a remote HRBP!! Message me and I’ll put you in touch
Ofc! I’ve never DMd on this before so if you can’t reach me lmk
The more concise the better!!! Hrbp roles are enormous so I understand the desire to share share share but keep it concise. Also look over the JD for the important pieces of the role and have good answers prepared for them. That’s what recruiters use to ask questions
Use the Situation / Action / Result framework when sharing examples and keep the following in mind:
- Don’t spend too much time describing the situation, and instead focus on the action you took to respond and the final outcome (i.e. what was the impact to the stakeholders involved?)
- To the extent possible, reference metrics or quantifiable ways you measured your success in that situation
- Write it out or bullet point your thoughts ahead of time, but leave the props/notes out of view during the actual interview if you can. You don’t have to memorize everything word for word or bullet for bullet; just think of your story in that structured format (S / A / R)
What opportunities do you have to describe how quickly you have learned new concepts/skills and applied that learning in previous roles? Using your example of employee relations, you might state that you have not personally been the driver, but have seen x approach and recognize pros and cons or that approach. As others have said, practice absolutely helps - if you can, ask a trusted friend/colleague to help you practice and provide feedback.
When you say that you are not a good articulator, can you clarify? As I’m sure you know communication is a large part of HR in general but specifically in a management role especially.
If you are more analytical then I would steer your direction closer to HRBP and use numbers and statistics related to your accomplishments to sell yourself ☺️
Thank you for the advice. I have great communication skills but not the best at “telling a good/impressive story.” I feel that I need to get better at articulating my accomplishments so I can stand out more!
If you’re not already doing that, using a model to tell your stories (like the star model) will be a good approach. But HRBP is a hard nut to crack for some, and would require high influence and persuasion. Doing mock interviews, and preparing very clear verbatim answers will help convince the interviewing panel. Also really try to show that confidence and persuasion skills in the interviews. Good luck 🍀
Thank you for the tips!
HRBP roles vary widely from company to company. Do your best to learn about how the HR org is structured and consider the customer group you would potentially be supporting and tailor your answers to demonstrate how your experience might fit in the company you are interviewing with. I've found roles at large matrixed orgs tend to require different skills and experience than roles in smaller flatter organizations. It helps to ask of the org is in growth mode or working through org changes like mergers or acquisitions or integrations and understand the industry in which you are interviewing so you know what skills and experiences to describe in your answers.
