Parent phone calls can have some victories. Calls/emails real-time for students who are not present or students that have gone idle during class can turn around after a talk with one or both parents. GoGuardian is great at documenting trends, so if students say they were in class/participating but were, the logs will show activity during the class and parents can see your POV.
Great interventions on your end as well!
I would suggest slowing down and incorporating as many interactive activities as possible. Lots of talking, manipulatives, and movement if possible.
I know I’m definitely feeling semi-back and I want to forge ahead, but I need to stay mindful that our kids are not used to the physical interactions or (based on our bell schedule last year) working on school for so long. I think slowing down and including community building activities will only help in the long run. This is a marathon, not a sprint! ☺️
Today, as a District our Teaching & Learning Department decided that we would maintain the fast past of the pacing guideline, which we had prior to the beginning of the Pandemic. Also, if students don’t understand we should provide remediation during warm-up time, homework, and with personal learning choices . I felt so discourage. Parents feel like we are moving to fast. It is hard to motivate my students during this ongoing Pandemic.
I’m just teaching them what they need to know. My eighth graders are so far behind we had to go back to sixth grade pre-algebra, but it would be a disservice to them to try to force them into grade level topics
High school students need to take ownership of their learning, especially with the heavy use of math apps while they were learning remotely. If the current concept I am teaching involves prior knowledge, I model a few examples and provide opportunities for extra help as well as video links for students to practice on their own. It's hard to teach calculus to a group of students who are struggling to solve linear equations, graph parent functions, and factor polynomials.
