Rising Star
A WOC run agency is something this industry desperately needs at the moment. I can’t help you at all, but I believe in you!!!
thank you! you are giving me strength!
The first thing I would look for is a executive partner that can bring clients.
The second thing I would look for is an amazing producer. Maybe to be a partner.
These two departments are the ones that create obstacles for really good work to get approved and produced. So having partners from those areas I believe is crucial.
Also look into government (state or federal) contracts that require them to hire a certain percentage of women/POC owned vendors as clients.
Rising Star
I've done it twice. First time I started it with a good friend of mine that was a producer/director. We are both POCs and started our agency with a small room the DUMBO wework. We had some good clients, ranging from small production studios, publications, fintech, pharma and an advocasy group with government funding. (Obama era). Out agency was more of a collective than an actual agency because everyone we worked with were freelancers or other LLCs and my friend and I were doing most of the client outreach and we also supported other friends clients by using the collective to expand the scope.
I had to leave the collective because my wife had a complicated pregnancy and as a Founder/ECD you can't take paternity leave. And then my friend also announce that he was starting his family and we decided to dissolve it, and pass along our clients to trusted friends.
My family now (2 kids) eventually moved to Los Angeles so we can be closer to our elderly parents. I started another LLC and worked with a bunch of random clients but ended up doing social media campaigns for an actor that wanted to create his own production company. Now I run his marketing department and do nothing with my LLC.
For me, having your own agency is hard and as I write this I'm realizing I really suck at it but because of it I put myself in positions for other opportunities.
thank you for sharing your experience! i’m glad you have found a situation that you’re happy with
Ive helped a friend start one. It was a lot of networking and finding a funding source/partner. If you need an ACD, I’m down!
