It's a sleep regression, it will pass. Sucks in the meantime. Try making sure they get a good amount of exercise to tire them out.
In the same boat. 16 month old started napping for 30 minutes max for a few days then refused unless held or in the stroller. It’s now effecting night sleep too! Usually regressions are min. 2 weeks so I’m hoping we will be out soon (one week in). Making WFH even harder than it was already! Good luck, you are not alone!
18 months is the WORST sleep regression. I’d keep putting them in the crib and set a timer for an hour. If they don’t fall asleep, go in and get them and plan for a super early bedtime. And mentally prepare yourself for this happening for a few weeks. But they’ll eventually get past it. Good luck!
The only thing that ever helped me with sleep period was the huckleberry app and sticking to it as precisely as possible. Hopefully it’s a phase. Godspeed!!
Definitely a phase - he won’t truly drop a nap until 3+ or later (mine was 4 and even at 4.5 still naps occasionally). Try building and keeping a super specific routine - play a specific 3 songs when it’s getting close to time, let him indicate he is a little tired (but not too tired), song a specific song as you carry him to the room, same bottle, same 3 books, light out, same phrase, same 2 songs, same sound machine noise. Same kiss. Then goodnight. If that doesn’t work for a few weeks, once you go through it - you could wait a while then walk around in a stroller - which will often put him to sleep (though for a shorter time). Once he is napping again, move back to room sleeping.
Ughhhh. Ok sorry to say this but some kids stop napping at 18 months entirely. I hope other people on this thread are right and this is just a regression. If your kid is done napping at a year and half, you might have to try to force it with lots of exercise and then a long walk in the stroller or a long drive. Sometimes though, when they're done they're done, and naptime becomes quiet screen time. :/
Sleep regressions are terrible, I’m sorry. My guy is only 4 months but my pediatrician has always had a trick or two to offer for his weird sleeping changes so that may be worth the call? He had a pretty bad regression at 3 months (like, he was a monster) which was due to a growth spurt so your guy may be in the midst of something like that. All my best to you.
My six month old will not nap for longer than 15-30 minutes, except on occasion if I’m sleeping with him, but even then sometimes that’s the limit. SOS.
