Why not try to make partner at your current firm? Also you can try to negotiate progression point but that may not help you. To make it to MD, you need to be showing a 2 year story with significant sales that can be attributed to you (think well over $10m per year) as table stakes. Then also shine in multiple dimensions that generally require building a deep and loyal network. All that is hard to do as an experienced hire. I came in at manager level, and now, at SM C, I am just now feeling confident in my ability to start my 2 year story. Unless you feel confident you can do this in under 5 years, it may not help you to come in any higher than A.
Gotcha makes sense.. definitely worth a shot at Accenture then. If you focus your energies on: building a sustainable pipeline of sales and building your network (under you so you can scale, above you so you can have folks pulling you up to MD, and besides you so you can collaborate with others across accenture outside of your practice to sell work), you can definitely have a shot at MD. Would just be careful about trying to come in any higher than SM A unless you feel like you can do all this in less than 5 years. Good luck!
Is this in strategy or consulting? Will make a difference
Good question. Consulting.
Would def try and negotiate the base. Forget the signing
I was hired as an analyst and the recruiter told me they couldnt do much about salary. Not that this isnt true at higher levels, but it was a blatant lie as most people were at least 20% higher than me.

Try to come in as L5. If you are already AD somewhere, propose for L5 offer .
It’s an L6a based on my experience. Whatever that means.

L6 level with progression point A.... basically manager starting point . Are you coming from non B4 consulting background? Who takes a pay cut and 6 years wait before you could become an MD
Senior Manager has 5 progression points

Are you coming in at 200k?
Slightly higher than that as a 6A in a B cost-of-living city (I think I got that terminology correct)
They barely gave anyone raises unless they were promoted the last two years as far as I know (someone please correct me if I’m wrong or if you know about this specific group). If the salary is lower than your current, I wouldn’t take it. The work life balance in consulting is honestly terrible in general, but not sure if it would be comparable to your current company. It really depends on your project because, if the project is manageable, it’s not TERRIBLE work life balance (this is more rare than typical). Expect to work 9.5 to 10 hrs a day minimum.
Here is a typical “day/ week in the life” for managers in consulting, so you know what you’re signing up for (I didnt):
- full time project either leading the project or at least a work stream or 2
- constant BD/ sales work
- potentially new partnership development depending on your group
- be a mentor/ career coach for one & most likely more than 2 people after one year
- support at least one internal firm initiative, one for your project as well
Yeah the Friday thing is actually clutch, FYI it’s basically only internal calls that are for firm initiatives and townhalls, this doesn’t include anything client / sales related. I think the original messaging was a bit confusing because a few client related calls got cancelled after it was sent out but I can confirm this is not the case.
