You’ll want to go to an agency with a strong Strat department where there are mid level folks that have time and interest in teaching. If you go to a shop with a lot of senior people, they might not have time to teach you how to do your job.
And if you go to a smaller place, that might pay more, you’ll be learning on the job
Two ways to look at it, larger agencies tend to have bigger strategy departments where Jr's tend to learn the basics (eg trend watching, competitive analysis, basic briefs, etc); smaller creative shops will ask more if their Jr's both within and beyond the scope of what's strictly strategy. The later was the path I took, it served me well to learn the whole workings of the agency. However, I had to work harder to pick up and understand the craft of strategy.
Both McCann’s are right. I happened to have the big agency, big account, tons of volume experience and, personally, think that’s the best way to start out.
Having said that, the best advice I got (and it’s true now more than ever): take the first offer you get. This discipline is obnoxiously hard to break into, you’ll learn anywhere you go, and no one is ever going to judge you on the “agency brand” associated with your first job.
As far as specific agencies, dig around here (or take a look at the Effie awards) and it won’t be hard to find out which shops care about strat.
Whenever you can find a job - good luck!
We have immediate openings at PHD if you’re interested! Feel free to message me if you’d like to chat about the agency.
