I ask because friend has a very bad case of ADHD he had no choice but to disclose to ensure he was getting the proper support. He has been with his company for over two years so far and he said his manager and team members have been really good with his accommodations.
Another friend who is a manager at her company told me she has a direct report who has accommodations for adhd and she’s well supported.
I’m curious to hear more perspectives especially because I requested accommodations for an assessment during and interview process and still got the offer for which I will be starting soon I really needed those accommodations it was a non negotiable.
I will not disclose details of the companies for privacy reasons but these companies in mention are all big well known companies so I’m not sure if that changes anything but it’s so hard to find experiences of accommodations w/ those whom have neurodivergent conditions because this is a fairly new thing and fear of disclosure.
Once again I’m not here requesting opinions.
My company is really good about creating psychological safety around such things. Despite that, I’m only just recently starting to feel safe disclosing. I disclosed to my old boss last week. I’m seeking promotion and it has been mentioned a few times that I should come into the office more. Our official RTO policy is 3 days a week and I usually can only handle 1-2 days. I am considering putting in the formal request for accommodation in the next few months if it becomes necessary. Best of luck to you!
It’s nice to know I could say medical condition if I feel the need to, thanks for that tip! I am actually ASD level 1, and I sometimes feel autism has even more stigma attached to it than ADHD, so I’ve been grappling for over a year with whether or not it’s safe to disclose. I do feel it is a superpower of sorts in my role, but if time in office is the only reason I’m not being promoted to management, then I feel I might HAVE to seek accommodation formally. I will think on the “medical condition” wording!
I have disclosed my adhd in my workplace. I began with my direct supervisor and disclosed it out of necessity. We work well together and I trust her, so that was the approach I was able to get comfortable with. She encouraged me to disclose to a specific HR rep, who she was aware has a child with adhd. That HR rep then further communicated as needed.
I’ve found folks in my workplace to be accepting and willing to work with me / try to understand my needs. I have not felt that my disclosure has been used against me. With all of that said, I do believe that I work in a particularly accepting and understanding environment. I would not have been comfortable making this disclosure in other places I’ve worked.
Thank you for sharing this!
