You came to the UK expecting world class dental care. Most people I know don’t have dentists, good luck 😂
Hi also from Toronto. It is a faster service here (20 min sounds right) and not as thorough, but still does the job I suppose. You might be able to find something closer to a North American service by doing some research into private providers
If you have some suggestion why not just throw it in the comment. It could just save him some time
Dental care is a royal rip off here, maybe the worst across Europe. People go to Turkey to have their teeth done bc it’s cheap (they get ripped off in a different manner there 🤣). Just make sure you’re under a private insurance that covers it.
Yeah, what you had was probably just a regular checkup. General dentistry is state-subsidised by the NHS but this only includes a ‘health’ check. Cleaning aka ‘scaling and polishing’ is done only as needed. They’ll likely clean any areas that need it but the focus is more to prevent sick teeth rather than produce a nice smile.
Any other services e.g. full cleaning, straightening, whitening etc… are classed as ‘cosmetic dentistry’ which you have to pay for out-of-pocket. So if your dentist says a scale and polish is not clinically necessary but you want one anyway, you will have to pay for it privately.
If you have a cavity and need a filling that’s a whole separate issue and can even be down to the dentist’s discretion depending on how big. (I had a cavity that my dentist filled for free because I quote ‘it’d be silly to charge for a cavity that small’)
TL;DR NHS dentistry doesn’t cover ‘cosmetic’ services, so if you’re looking for a full clean you’d better go private

Cleaned. Plus they asked me to pay more later as they did some ‘extra work’. I am not sure if this is a UK thing or this dentist specific thing. Looking to get some insight into dentists here. Thank you
You don't say if you used an NHS dentist, but you really shouldn't. They are very limited in what treatments they provide. I use these people linked below. I am supposed to go every 6 months but it's usually every year for me as I find it difficult to make the time to get to my local practice. Try asking them if they will do you a long hygiene appointment: https://www.bupa.co.uk/dental/dental-care
