Yeah that’s the issue where I am now. No grocery store within 45 minutes, and it’s not good even there. DGs kill the one or two local markets around here. And they struggle against DG
I’m torn on how I feel about DG’s. The only grocery store we had in town burned down about 3 or 4 years ago, so it filled that void to a certain degree. They started carrying essentials like milk, eggs, etc. For some older folks that don’t drive, it’s their only option. Not great, but better than nothing. The major issue I have is that they pay their employees shit and work them to death. Turnover is huge. I had a cousin that worked there briefly when she lost her job due to the Rona. She made $8.50/ hour to stock shelves, open/close, clean, and run the register. You rarely see more than one employee working at any of them. Pretty damn sickening.
I’ll tell you what really kills me to see. People in their 50’s and 60’s working like dogs for shit pay. Then they go to the local gas station and spend almost their entire checks on beer and scratch off cards. I’ve seen it too many times. Its a never ending cycle that won’t soon be broken. Sad as hell man.
