I generally recommend CompTIA Sec+ as a starting point. Good content, vendor agnostic, no requirements for experience. However, If cost is no option and work is paying for it, take the SANS course. If you’re planning on being on the technical side of Cyber (Ops/Blue Team, PenTesting/Red Team, Engineering) vs GRC, then I recommend career stepping stones in Service Desk (to get the lay of the ‘IT land’), Desktop Support (focus on OS & hardware standards & deployment processes), Tech Services (networks, servers, storage, db), and Software Dev or Application Support.
Certs cost money for tests, renewals, and association memberships, so choose strategically. You may want one or two to open doors early on your career, then others for the long-haul. If had to choose only one, no doubt I’d choose the CISSP through (ISC)2.
Good luck!
In my experience, the Sec+ is going to be more widely recognized as a baseline foundational certification for entry level positions. Many cyber jobs will actually require you to have the Sec+ (or get it within 6-12months of hire).
If I were you, I would go for the Sec+ first and if you want to add to your resume, get the GSEC.
Well, GIAC are the best certs and CompTIA means nothing to a cybersecurity team, so probably get the GIAC.
Hello, I am pivoting into a new career and looking into web3 financial crime & compliance (since it’s fairly unregulated). I have no tech experience but I was looking into the CGRC certification (Associate), along other certs like CAMS - CCAS (Certified Crypto-asset Anti Financial Crime Specialist). Am I thinking this right? Would this be helpful making this career move and getting the right certifications? It’s gets expensive (per previous comments) gettinn BB certifications and memberships without a really well thought out plan. Any advice appreciated!
