Yup, can’t go back, just forward. Focus on your CPA, go to NABA, apply for smaller firms, transfer up to bigger firm once you have PA experience.
Thank you I figured that. I’m going to the NABA conference in October hopefully that helps me build some new relationships with recruiters from the firms.
Going to be hard as the people at your level would normally be pulled from college. You are probably too expensive for staff but don’t have experience to be hired as anything other then that. Find a recruiter as they know the needs of the firms. They can definitely get you in as when a firm has a need, they will take anyone
When I say recruiter, I mean external recruiters who’s job it is to get you in there. They are more incentivized to get you a job
I was also a nontraditional applicant. I got into a large regional firm by networking at the NABA conference, but was reached out too after my 2nd conference attendance. If you are going to the conference, just be open to networking beyond just recruiters. Also keep in mind that you may not get an offer from the NABA conference, mainly because each firm has a select number of candidates they are searching for whether its entry level, intern, etc, and as a nontraditional be prepared to answer for why you want to do public accounting and know which area as well. If you say you want to do audit, tax, outsourcing and consulting, a recruiter may curb to someone with more direction that's easier to place.
Thank you for that advice. I do know why I want to go into public and I know I want to do Audit that’s my concentration in Grad school. And yeah I am definitely going into the conference with an open mind that it won’t get me a job but help me build up my networks.
Hey Grant Thornton, I am currently in my Masters program I finish in December I am apart of the NABA NY chapter but since I’m doing my masters online I don’t have an board position but I was treasurer in the past for undergrad. I will be at NABAERC this year so hopefully I can network and see what happens from there.
Are you trying to do big 4? Do you have your CPA? Do you at least have your CPA hours? What time of school did you go to?
Yes I would like to do a big 4 but have been open to regional firms as well. I don’t have my CPA but I am beginning my application process now. I will have the 150 credit hours by the end of September I complete my Masters in December 2018. I go to Southern New Hampshire University which is an accredited school.
They won’t always just take anyone, especially if you are non traditional. My office definitely wouldn’t consider you if you aren’t even CPA eligible. Did you go to a brick abc mortar undergrad?
I Started at a SUNY but lost my housing due to a fire (long story lol), after that I completed my Bachelors at Southern New Hampshire since I started working full time. I really should have considered this when applying to grad school but it’s too late to dwell on that now 🤦🏾♀️
That’s interesting that you said that. I’ve had no luck with external recruiters, but I’ll try to look for Public accounting external Recruiters but the few I spoke to said they don’t typically deal with entry level positions for public accounting
Entrance into public accounting sometimes also depends on the need, industry, geographic location and timing. We're doing walk-in interview days at our firm.
Thank you EY1 that is some great advice I will definitely consider! I don’t have many friends in the Accounting industry so it’s really hard to get this advice or just have these kind of conversations
I would also consider attending additional conferences from the other affinity groups in your area, and even attending the nearby college career fairs. Even if you're not a student, taking time to speak with some of the Universities, they may make an exception for you attend and it gives you additional opportunities to meet one-on-one with recruiters.
Thank you Associate1 I appreciate your advice I didn’t know It even possible to go to another school career fair I’m right near Rutgers so that would be perfect. Thank you
I did it by going back to school (masters program), night classes, and becoming president of my school’s NABA chapter. Went to conference. Boom. Job. Now I’m a slave to the industry haha jk not really. But on the real, public is big on hiring and molding graduates unless you aim for smaller firms, then it’s more like a networking type thing
Awesome, then that’s great, definitely do that and other school career fairs. CPA would be a plus (I had one part passed when I was interviewing)
