Hi guys,

Trying to break in investment banking. Have a good 5+ years experience working at Big-4 firms. Any tips how to do that? What are the positions and companies I should target?

So…you’re not actually an IB analyst? Lol

I made the move in 2021 after 2 years in S&T from a non-target school. Ended up with 3 offers (2 MM, 1 EB). It’s just a grind apply for every opening and email the associate/VP on that coverage group with a compelling story. See who is on the street from your school / fraternity / other school orgs. It’s just a numbers game I interviewed for close to 6 months with 10+ super days across BB, EB, MM, etc and the tough part for me was convincing them someone from a S&T background had transferable skills even though I had none at the time lol … tldr use LinkedIn to find members on the teams hiring and cold email them like crazy

Makes sense. Wouldve done the same

Assuming accountant/CPA?

Might have to start as associate. At most, VP (if you’re lucky).

Again, associate was my base case for OP. If the stars aligned and Mars crashed into Uranus…. MAYBE OP could land something.

It was only a few short years ago where, if you had a pulse, you could almost do anything in IB. Not saying that’s now… but you get the idea.

What should I do in a scenario where I was hired (12+ years) with far less salary than(~20% less) than other members (4+ experience) in team and asked to take 80% of team's responsibilities. The hiring manager low balled me sensing that I am in dire need of that job and now I am stuck for 2 years now. The company is a big shot but I am literally getting paid less than what I used to make 10 years ago. Should I try to move within or look outside?

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

A question for VCs: I’m currently a VC analyst. I want to eventually come back to the VC industry and perhaps become a partner (if possible). However, there’s an opportunity to work at an Endowment Fund (Harvard/Yale/Stanford level). Would you recommend me to spend the next 3-4 years doing something that’s not directly VC related? Would it be hard for me to come back to the VC industry with this experience? Why or why not? Thank you so much for your time and help!

I wonder how many here are doing better, or similar, or worse than this. How's your overall investment doing, and what your chart looks like?

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.

Interesting all the noise about these PPT, my take:

The pandemic took all the upside of an IB analyst life (client meetings in person, fancy trips, suit up, worshiped at networking events) and left all the juniors with the downside (long hours, monkey-like type of job, aggressive work environment).

Not that the complaints are not sort of legitimate but you may need to revise the decision-making process that led you to accept a return offer. Specially if you were looking for less hours.
