Might be worth detailing out your specific experience a bit further, will help people assess what they can do to help
Yep! Added it into another comment 😁
Thanks for the response! That makes sense ;)
- I've started my career in a graduate management program (2 years) doing different software & process change implementations within a large corporate.
- I did two years of Product Management for a Industrial Analytics platform, leading an offshore development team to develop a platform that connected to a multitude of IoT platforms to generate insights into delays and obstructions on factory shopfloors
- I spent the last 2 years managing a team to implement a global Customer Service platform (Salesforce). My role was program manager (timeline, budget, supplier management) & product ownership (requirements gathering, workshop facilitation, managing offshore developers).
I would guess the main issue is that I have switched industries (?). My initial two roles were in Healthtech, and my latest role was in Renewable Energy.
I'm struggling with the fact that I can't even seem to land interviews in Australia (less than < 6 interviews with over 1500 applications)... It doesn't help that I don't really have a local network of course.
Things I've tried:
- Cold approaching recruiters, with the most common response being "we'll reach out when something fitting comes up"
- Having coffees with managers - good for networking but there hasn't been a hot lead on this yet
- Having professional reviews of my resume. I've had 2 different (paid) businesses by now review my CV with some feedback. This has helped slightly tuning it, but it hasn't really been a gamechanger
- Re-training myself: following a number of developer bootcamps to get more technical knowledge in, which should make my overall profile stronger
- Aiming for more junior jobs (graduate roles), but this hasn't led to a lot of conversations
I am starting to get a little anxious if I've made the right decision moving with my partner, and also the fact that I'm starting to build a significant career gap.
I love Australia a lot (good weather, great food, amazing nature) - but career wise it's been rough so far!
Thank you! I’m putting my job search on the back burner for now. Focusing on moving to a bigger place before my fast-approaching due date, and in theory I’ll be a PR by the end of maternity leave. 🤞😅
Banks here typically require citizen/PR status — I think it’s some kind of regulatory or security requirement. (Again, Australians aren’t big risk-takers.) There might be a workaround by applying to the innovation arm of a bank like Commbank’s x15 Ventures.
Your other challenge is that most of the health insurers and about half of the energy companies are in Melbourne.
Companies that might value your skillset: Woolies X (dabbling in health), Ampol (petrol company trying to get into EV charging), HCF (health insurer based in Sydney), Origin (electricity provider based in Sydney), and global Aussie tech unicorns like Atlassian and Canva. The big US tech companies did major cuts/scalebacks in the past few years, but it might be worth targeting them too.
There’s also a bustling startup culture in Sydney. I would also look at some of the portfolio companies of Aussie VC firms like Blackbird and Airtree.
Hey OP - DM me I have some network in medtech and energy and on some other areas too. Happy to share and help you make some more helpful contacts.
I'm confused though are you going for developer roles? Or product management roles?
I'm well aware I'm no expert, and will always have to trust the input of people with deep engineering experience. I went into PM because it for me is a nice blend between technical & business, and would like to just keep updated enough so I can understand technical discussion and architectural decisions when they're made. I don't believe I'll be able to lead / make those decisions myself however! 😁
Next to job hunting and following courses, I've started learning how to surf so life honestly could be worse 😉
Anyhow, thanks for connecting, as I've said, any help is appreciated!
Quick update for those interested. Found a Data Analytics Manager role at a Pharmaceutical in Sydney!
Life is bright again 😁
Where did you move from? Only reason I ask is I am Australian, but have worked extensively in many countries around the world, and Australia can be quite different in the way it approaches resume formatting, cover letters, application process etc.
If you’re more comfortable DMing me feel free. Might be able to identify some process related areas that could help you
Hi,
I moved from The Netherlands! I've had my resume check by some (paid) Aussie recruiters to get used to it. The cover letters I usually get crosschecked by some local friends. I'd be happy to get any tips you'd have!
