How did people find board of directors positions for nonprofits to give back to their community? Assuming it’s mostly word of mouth, but any other ideas?

Is it difficult landing an in-house position as only a second year corporate associate in big law? I know some people who went in-house straight out of law school and some who had no transactional background but went in-house after just a year of practice. Not having that same luck on my end.
