I’ve been working for my State Farm agency as a team member for 2 years. I am licensed in property and casualty as well as life and health, but only make $13 an hour. My observation is that it is hard for consulting partners to land the quality public or private board roles everyone naturally targets. Despite there being a significant amount of exceptional talent that could be deployed, there is a big bias against consultants. Everyone wants “operators,” but I feel every board could also benefit from one current or former consulting partner. But sadly, that’s not the way the external world looks at things...

Client counterpart and I were discussing a Consultant and the client told me he didn’t want this guy because the consultant is in his 50s. I quietly told the client that cannot be a reason plus I am in my 50s and you should have seen the client back paddle with compliments for me. Just a weird situation. Ageism is real.

We are buying a house and my knee jerk response was to look at a 30 year fixed mortgage (because that’s what I’ve always done). I realized last night that a 30 year mortgage might outlast me. Having a bit of an existential crisis now.

At this point in career, would you take a step down in title to grab a transfer opportunity and get out of a toxic work environment ?
