I have found that enjoyment in IA has nothing to do with the actual work itself and all about the people you work with. I'd say don't give up on IA just because you don't work with great people. You can find a great cultural fit in IA. In the meantime, make sure you're networking at your organization outside of IA. Are there EBGs you can join or other ways to get to know people? Maybe a golf league or fantasy sports? Volunteering at a Habitat build? You may even find a way to network yourself out of IA.
External audit is just the worst. I don't blame you at all there. I stuck it out for two years just for the CPA and hated every minute of it.
Establish realistic and achievable goals for yourself. Break down long-term objectives into smaller milestones to track your progress. Celebrate your accomplishments along the way to maintain motivation.
What type of role are you trying to transition into if not internal audit?
Anything tech related. Could, data analysis, IT infrastructure, etc.
I can't blame you because your job is pretty boring. Maybe what you need is a different career? Or maybe your job is not as challenging as you were expecting? It's just been almost a year. Try to get along with the people around you so that it doesn't feel like working at all.
